2008 EL, I'm assuming its still the 6r75 and not the 6r80... I have seen three different part numbers for the trans filter listed. Does anyone know the difference between the FT171 versus the FT188 filters? Are they interchangeable/successor pn, or are they different filters altogether?

yeah it is the 6r75 so make sure you ONLY use mercon SP .. i used a wix filter, you can reuse the factory gasket.

filters are not interchangeable, the pickup tube is longer for the 6r75 vs 6r80

Awesome, thanks for the info.

I've always used full synthetic Maxlife ATF in all my vehicles, and it is approved/compatable with the SP.

let us know how maxlife works out. 6r75 is a bit picky, there's a reason why ford keeps making SP

I can't figure out where I bought my trans filter, I haven't done the trans service yet as i'm waiting until after I complete my timing job.

so my question is this, did I screw up by getting the motorcraft/ford filter which is all black and has a long pickup tube with an orange-ish gasket on the top of the tube??

i'm a little confused and having doubts now cause when I look on the ford dealer parts website, it literally shows two different pictures with two slightly different looking filters, but it is on the same product listing/page.

If you installed the long-tube you’ll be fine.

This DOES explain why some people have filter clearance issues when switching to the Dorman 6r80 trans pan with the drain bolt.

i'm such a dummy, the two pictures is because it shows the bottom side and top side, the black side with long tube on top and the short spout with un-finished side for bottom.
