question is....should i do filter and pan oil change or leave it till.....it goes i guess. what would you do?

From what I've heard, the only time that you have issues after changing trands fluid is when the old fluid was totally brown and burnt. The theory was that the old fluid coated everything and didn't allow the new fluid to work, so the trans slipped. This could just be one of those old mechanic's tales though.

I've got 125K on my Navigator and never changed it. Was thinking about changin' it to Royal Purple synthetic until I saw how much it was and how much it holds .. I'd never recover the price difference.

Looking at a manual for a 97, it says you use Mercon fluid (doesn't say Mercon V.)

Probably won't find straight Mercon anymore. Mercon V was reformulated a few years back to work for Mercon or Mercon V. Mercon V is all that is sold now and works just fine in both fluid types.

Hmm, I was beginning to wonder if that was the case. Makes sense.

aircagoo I'd check/confirm with the local dealer just to be sure :)

Regular Mercon trans fluid is designated as Mercon III / Dextron now.
Mercon V is a different product, and I couldn't find a synthetic version of it.

Anyone know if it makes a difference if you use regular or synthetic trans fluids?
