Transmission issue - 2019

Wife's 2019 Limited - She had issues with the transmission today on 1 hour round trip drive. She was heading home on the freeway and it was seemingly stuck in Neutral and wouldn't move right away. She braked and started to pull off and then it corrected itself. Appointment to take it in to the dealer on Wednesday.

Of course, she just barely cleared 61K miles. Already had a cam phaser replacement about 6K miles ago. A week ago, got a message from the Ford app: 'Power train fault'. The message went away when she started it again. Same day, had an error message said it was error with the electronic slip differential.

From some quick research, looks like the trans issue is fairly common, some mention getting a new CDF drum.

Please let me know if you have info on any of these issues. Luckily, I have an extra vehicle for her to drive while it's being fixed. She went from a longer commute, to recently mostly working from home. So we'll have to decide if it's better to get this fixed, or if it's time to trade it in for something else.

Sounds like the issues I had. Just know, if you trade it in and they pull the info from the computers, there's likely a crap ton of transmission errors in there, which might affect your trade in value. But yea, sounds like it needs a rebuild with the new CDF drum, which is what mine got.

Dropped it off at the dealer Wednesday. They called today and said it does need a new trans. Since the warranty just barely expired (I think 61K), they are trying to get it approved for warranty work. I assume they will tell us to pound sand. Probably look around for an independent trans shop.

I'm guessing you'll get stuck with the bill. If you choose an independent shop it needs a decent warranty. If you let Ford do it, the trans will be warrantied for 3 yrs and you can also open a "financial assistance" claim with Ford's Customer Care to get a partial refund. Claims process can drag out for many months.

If they deny, contact Ford direct and ask for a liaison to speak to. I had an issue that was going to be expensive. They covered it for the $100 deductible.

The dealer ended up offering to cover 60%, so it's going to cost $4400. At least it's not $10K, but still not happy about putting that much money into an SUV with 60K miles. Might be a good reason to not get a Ford next time around. Though many MFG's haven't been reliable within the last 5+ years.

Sad. Do you have a powertrain warranty left? I bought mine used. It came with a 12 month 12000 mile bumper to bumper warranty and a 7 year 100000 mile Powertrain warranty. So I'm covered for the tranny with a $100 deductible.

VERY COMMON! The fact that they have a redesigned drum “fix” available means to me that Ford should have done a recall- same with the cam sensors. Knowing what I now know after $11K in rebuilding bills, I would have definitely bought an extra warranty on this poorly designed vehicle since FORD hasn’t stepped up!

Agreed. We had the cam phaser issue too about 5K miles ago. Luckily, it was still under warranty. Just figure how many people get stuck with these two major repairs after the warranty is expired.

I have a 2019 Expy XLT. Have the 100,000 extended warranty, it has about 93,000 miles on it. It's had cam phasers replaced, rebuilt transmission and lots of other problems. I love the Expedition but so many issues. Before we hit the 100,000 mile mark we will explore buying another warranty.

For every one of the Expeditions that have problems, there's dozens that don't... My 2021 Limited Max has 63k completely maintenace free miles on it. I did spend the $4k and bought the 125k extended warranty at the time we bought it, so I'm still not worried if I do have any issues at any point, but it's not all doom and gloom for every Expedition.

Just had the torque converter go out in our 2019 expedition limited 6 weeks ago (only 47k miles on it), I bought this one at CarMax but got the extended warranty so they covered 80 percent of it with 2k out of pocket. Then last week it dropped out of gear again on my wife luckily just down the street from our house so had to get it towed into the dealer that replaced the last one. My wife doesn't trust it anymore so looks like we will be trading it in/selling it off. She loves the truck but the transmission problem is a show stopper.
