Transmission sounds/noises?

Just recently I've started hearing some noises & I'm not positive if it's coming from the Tranny but lets take a shot in the dark here.

When I'm driving it sounds like a coffee can rolling on the road. A grinding almost kind of noise. When I turn it off there is a lot of pinging & tinking coming from the same area. More than normal.

Some times I'll just be driving on a smooth road & randomly a loud noise like when you run over sewer covers. Sounds like metal just clanging very hard on the ground..

Call me paranoid because I hope your right.

I was wrong it's not the transmission.

I have the truck jacked up right now & this is what I see.



I'm guessing it's the parking break? Recently I had a new one installed.

I have no idea how to take that caliper off to find out the problem. That's why I paid a shop to do it for me, hah...

its easy to do. super easy. if i remember right you need a torx set. the star head. and two bolts will have it off... if i remember right. i need to see a picture of the caliper to see if im right. but its easy to do. and that is your parking brake. ever drive around with it on? haha ive done that before.

Yeah the parking break is trashed. It wasn't even hooked up properly.



No more going to shops. From now on I'm my own mechanic.

So I took out that rusted parking break & put the wheel back on without a PB. When I move the wheel back and fourth it still makes a grinding noise.

Note: the rotor wasn't on there tight so when I put the wheel on it pushed the rotor in place.

Is this why it's grinding? I need to make the rotor stay on tight some how?

Problem fixed, well kinda...

No more grinding, breaks work fine.

I'm just without a parking break. I hope that isn't important? I'm not planning on parking on any hills in Colorado or anything, hah...

I'm glad you fixed your problem! The parking brake is pretty much useless unless you are taking out your driveshafts or doing something with the transmission where you won't be able to have it in park, but you can always just block the tires.

You learned an important lesson . It's always good to do your own work. I've heard of so many shady mechanics and not to mention you will save a ton of money doing it yourself! I do all my own work unless I absolutely can't do it (not much you can't do by yourself). Also you will learn to hear and start diagnosing sounds earlier which will also save you money in the long run.

Thanks for sharing your findings! It's always nice for other people who may have a similar problem to see fixes for problems.

I've always called it the emergency brake. It acts as a secondary braking system, albeit a poor one, in case your main system has a failure. NC mandates vehicles have them and to pass inspection, it must hold the vehicle stationary with the motor running while in drive or reverse.

In PA the parking brake has to operate in order to pass inspection and that all depend on the garage that does the inspection. But if they check it, it must work.
