Looking at purchasing a used travel trailer with 27ft box length with an overall length of 32ft. Dry weight of 6200 lbs and an additional 1500 lbs of cargo weight. All in at 7700 lbs. Hitch weight of 700 lbs. Its a 2015 Rockwood 2702ws.

We will towing with our 2021 Max with HD tow package 9000 lbs capacity. Looking to see if the group feels its safe to tow this weight and length combination and if so the recommended hitch assembly for sway control. Any pics of what you are towing would be great.

Previous towing experience is only with 1 tons with a 5th wheel box trailer.

Hi,

Bottom line IMO you should be safe, and you're w/in the weight limits of your Exp. I would find a nearby Kat scale and measure with the full load you'd typically travel with to verify that and your WD. It won't feel as stable and solid as a 1-ton, however.

I currently tow a 27' Outback 230RS, which is 5,400 lbs dry, 7,300 loaded, tongue wt ~ 700lbs. My Exp Max is stock - no mods, and I use an Anderson WD hitch. So far it tows it very well, and we're in AZ with regular trips to Flagstaff and North that take us past 7,100 ft elevation. I would like to improve the rear suspension ride when towing so I'm looking at options, but it's much better than my previous Tahoe, and about the same as my '08 Navigator w/air suspension. Much more power and no problem on the hills, though. Better off the line than my '04 Excursion Diesel, but the Excursion is the most stable towing platform I'm driven, and we can stuff it full of family and gear w/o worrying about exceeding payload.

It will be fine. My camper is around 7,700 GVWR and 7,000 wet. My only upgrade is E load tires, which made a substantial improvement to stability. Just make sure you visit a scale and get the tongue and axle loads right. You can rent one if you want to try it out first.

I'm using a 12K pound Equalizer WDH. Towing a 25RDS Keystone Cougar that can gross out at 8800 lbs. Just wife and I so we pack light and loaded camper is just under 8K pounds. Hitch weight loaded is over 1100 lbs. so we sometimes leave the two 30 ;b propane tanks at home. This will lighten up the hitch weight a lot. 2nd AC up front ..glass windshield and the 2 big propane tanks all add to the heavy hitch weight. Factory shows 835 empty. I also run 10 ply E rated BFG's for extra sidewall stability. Any long trips I'll borrow son in laws F250!!

If you want to be as safe as possible;
check ProPride 3P. Expensive! Yes, new about$3300. But your vehicle & TT are also expensive. This hitch ELIMINATES SWAY. Do some research on it and judge for yourself.
