I've not seen this on any of my cars since 1982!
Okay, just did the brakes on my 2014 4WD Limited. I bought it at 95K miles in what I describe as extremely good condition. All service records were provided. I dove the car for 8,000 miles and did a brake job. No weird wear patterns that I can remember, it was just ready. I put on high quality components: Bosche Quiet Cast rotors and Wagner Oex pads.
Within 3,000 miles the right side had worn to nothing! I pulled them off and the outside surface of the right pad was worn to nothing and the disc was damaged. Wear on the inside pad seemed normal. I replaced the pads and disc on warranty with the same thing, assuming I'd gotten a bad heat treat or something. I checked operation and found I was only getting wear in two places on the right rotor: an outside strip on the outside face and an inside strip on the inside face. Apparently the caliper was 'cocked' and the faces of the pads are not parallel to the disc.
So, I replaced the caliper and tried again: same thing. After some searching I found that it is easy to get the inner and outer pads mixed up. I checked that and, yes, I had it wrong. So I fixed it. Same thing.
So is my caliper out of alignment with my disc? If so, is there any thing I can do about it short of replacing major suspension components???
