OK, first the particulars:

2001 Expy XLT, 4.6, 128K miles

I just had this thing serviced on Thursday, then proceeded to drive it to Georgia and back over the weekend, roughly a 1900 miles round trip. I have had no issues with this rig since I bought it in February and I've put almost 15K miles on it since then.

Now, skip to today. It has been raining miserably all day here, putting down about 3-4 inches of the wet stuff. My truck is parked outside, on a slight incline, nose up. I leave work at 4:30EST, and I notice that my wipers took a minute to kick on, but figured that I just wasnt paying attention. Then I noticed that my radio wasn't on and I always have it on. When I pushed the on/off button, I realized that it was not just off, it was OFF, because I didn't even have a clock showing. While sitting at a redlight, I put it in park to shut it off and restart it, figuring that it was some sort of gremlin. As I put it in Park, the radio came back on. Moved the selctor to Reverse, the radio went off, Neutral, it cam back on. Drive, it went off again. I should also note that when I did this, my wipers would stop for 30 seconds to a minute and then start again. I also noticed that my 4x4 indicator was flashing, but when the wipers stopped, it stopped. When the wipers started again, it began flashing again.

When I got home, I parked it on my lane on another incline, this time with nose down. An hour and half later, I come out and, with the switch off, I notice sounds coming from behind the dash. Electrical buzzing type sounds, kinda like an old pinball machine board, but muted (I know that sounds crazy as hell, but it is the best description I can think of). I start up the truck, the sounds go away and everything works just fine now. What the hell?

In March I had an issue with it sitting in a pouring rain for a day, but that turned out to be a bad COP that had gotten damp. No such issue this time. It runs fine and is throwing no codes...

Help?

Sounds like the dreaded 'windshield leak in to the GEM module' problem.
The Generic Electronic Module controls all kinds of items in the truck. When it gets wet many strange things begin to happen.

Yeah, it sounds as if a leak found it's way to the GEM. Do you have a sunroof? Possibly the drain plugs are blocked or clogged up. If not, your windshield seal may need to be replaced. Try to let it dry out before driving it again. If electronisc get used when wet they usually fry.

I let it sit overnight and everything appears to be fine now. Guess I'll wait and see if it happens again. I do not have a sunroof by the way. Thanks for the info. I'll keep an eye on it.

run a hose over windsheild from roof...let water run there...go inside truck where liner ends on top of windsheild..pull it back or down a bit....lQQk there WHILE water is running on roof(shut doors,lol)....bend your neck, get your head looking upward BETWEEN headliner and metal roof......TRICK IS TO HAVE RUNNING WATER ON ROOF....theres a weld to on each side near corners....water on mine seps thru there on drivers side...

youll see it leak in.....or shove a napkin in there, wait on a rainy day...feel if its wet.

cost me 800 bucks 1st time it happened 2me....2nd time it got wet again...i looked for leak and mech. gave me a 400 credit cause he DIDNT FIX LEAK.

i sealed leak by pulling back the windsheild trim and pulling off a bit...silconed it. i put napkin there...and just gets damp...not soaked or wet entirely but a little wet...might be condinsation....

anyway.....do windsheild over is IFY cause nobody garentees the glass wont break while removing it....or its just a $50 thing if u chance it...

u gotta check for leak.....and "yes" its prob. computer.

a leak like i had wouldnt wet rug/floor of truck. i looked for dark spots...none.

you had or have a leak...something got ruined. put the water hose over truck....pull back liner....youll find leak UNLESS!!! its on bottom of windsheld which i doubt.

oh yea!!! has windsheild EVER been replaced...look for that as well.

gl:(
