Well auto has its advantages like hill starts but also has disadvantages depending on vehicle and driver and driving style manual has more advantages to me because the additional gear will improve mpg if I don't dive it like I want to but manual transmissions are a dying breed and so car companies have tried to restrict it via teptonric but to me nothing is as fun as double clutching hauling ass up hill and the first gens transmission is a really solid 4 speed but I'm just a manual person and when your in traffic just leave it in neutral and get good at hill starts and its basically just an auto but your in control.. In my opinion every one should have an experience to drive a stick shift

i understand what your saying, it all comes down to personal preference. i can drive a manual all day and i'm pretty good with it. do i enjoy it? hell no! having a auto set up to shift the way you want if 100x better for me. once i got my programmer to set the shifts where and when i want i could not be happier. i find it a pain in the ass to downshift when passing..ect with a manual. i know the sports car purest hate me but give me a auto corvette, mustang or any other over a 5 speed. not to mention in a drag race with the same car the auto will win almost every time.

people like to use the winter time driving line..how your more in control with a manual. well i watched a guy downshift wrong and go off the highway last winter with his 5 speed dodge ram. he downshifted and lost traction and bam in the ditch he went.

Manual is fun in a fast car and an open road. Day to day operation and the traffic we get make manual a no go. Plus manual transmissions kill tow ability. As for an auto being faster it is the preferred setup for serious racers but requires a hair more hp/tq to put down a similar manual but launches much better and ignores human error with shifts and thus better.

I have driven manual tranny vehicles most of my life. Even had a T5 in my stang. In the increasing stop and go traffic we get around here it was becoming miserable. It took all the enjoyment out of having a manual tranny. Due to the constant stopping and going several yards it was hard on the clutch let alone you leg. If you attempt to follow at a distance where you could keep it in 1st and coast someone would inevitably jump in front of you making you stop once again.

I was a dedicated manual tranny guy but times change and with the available overdrive ratios and lock up torque converters todays automatics are much more efficient than those of the past.

I would not own a manual tranny vehicle as a daily driver today unless maybe I lived in a less congested part of the country where I could enjoy it more and it was less of a liability.

Haha now that we know where everybody and their brother stands on manual transmissions, I do have to say I am excited to see how TactialMonkey's project ends out. There are a couple of members here who have done the manual swap but I do not see them post much anymore. It would be interesting to hear what they say about them.

I drove my truck to work and back.

Yeah having lived and worked in MD and VA my whole life this is confirmed. I too was a manual guy up until 2008 when I bought my first jeep. Being as we have the worst traffic in the nation (MD/VA passed LA kalifornia) and some of the worst drivers automatic makes the most sense. Now if I lived west or east where I didnt have to messed with 495 or 695 I would still be a fan but after years of commuting out to NOVA never again.

As for tactical's idea dont think I'm trying to talk you out of going manual. I actually applaud you for doing somthing different. The only issue I have is the gimping of the hauling/towing capabilities.

Oh and Tom I see youre in MD maybe one day of you see a 2008 with an nra and lake gaston sticker give me a nice s/c driveby. :favorites37:

yes thats my point. when you add in driver error, most of the time the auto will do better then the manual on the track. when you compare lag time with shifts or launch's verses alittle more power train loss its pretty much a wash.

i drove my expy to dinner tonight. my other half has been driving it a bunch the last few months. i miss being able to jump in it and take it to work :(

Some perspective from a long time drag racer....

Properly powershifted, there is no lag with a manual tranny. Right foot stays planted to the floor and left foot just does a quick stab of the clutch to unload the tranny and initiate shift. When done well there is no rpm flair and its fairly smooth but obviously is very hard on syncros. Most dedicated drag race manuals do away with the syncros but that makes for some interesting street manners. They can also get quite expensive.

Autos that handle the increased torque of a modified car are typically less expensive and they do smooth out the power transition to the pavement making the vehicle easier to control. Most higher powered drag cars go for less shifts to help keep the tires planted. 2 speed powerglide is very popular among the mega hp crowd. But that was part of the fun with the manual.... it makes for a much wilder ride. I ultimately went with a C4 auto in my mustang due to cost after my glass 3rd gear in my stang broke for the 2nd time. A manual that would hold up to the torque cost well over double that of a C4.

For a bracket racer autos are generally more consistent making it more desirable.

Automatics also load the tires a lot softer than dumping the clutch, thus you're a lot less likely to break traction. I don't think any "sports" car should ever have an auto. Manuals are a lot more fun. That said I don't want a stick in my daily driver until I move to the South of France.

My brother actually drives a manual John Deere Gator at the golf course he works at... Probably makes about the same power as the Tiburon!

Me and the Blue Boat (my buddy's new nickname for the truck) are going to the lake place today.

I decided to give the girl some rust protection treatment.
The frame looks rather nice now... hopefully it will look that way even some years from now ;)

On the weekend I did all new brakes ( EBC & BREAR Sloted\drilled) with hawk pads, also replaced all 3 of the transmission lines.

Thankfully I dont live in the snow belt nor do we get any other then flurries, but they do salt despite all that and Id like a bit more protection. My 2008 dosent have any rust, but Id like to get it protected before I have to worry. What is that stuff?

Well the manual has deeper gears and then my neighbor has a F350 7.3L with the same 5 speed I want behind it its manual 4x4 too and he uses that truck to move construction equipment and it pulls harder then the dump truck hahah they also have a 5.4L F250 with the same 5 speed and it will tow almost anything the diesel will just a little slower hahahah and I live in a world where no one can drive in the Issaquah Sammamish Bellevue area where I roam you would not believe the stupidity of other motorists so having the manual will allow me to down shift and haul ass with the boat in to... I'm pretty excited my mom bought a boat but now I'm the tow ***** hahaha also the expy is getting new front and rear rotors and pads while we are out of town the rotors in front were 2% and rear 7% it needed new brakes worse than I had hoped

i put a late 90s Tahoe to shame tonight at 8 red lights. he never could get past my rear door. then he was just a distant blip in the rear view. he really tried though!! the ol' 5.4 and 3:73s still pulls decent i guess.

Wow.... 8 lights.

Think he would have given up after the 1st few.

Chances of me hitting 8 lights here with no cars or traffic in front are pretty much zero. I am happy if I can hit just one. Just two in a row would be cause for celebration. LOL.

Gotta move to Alaska.........
