My fuel tank is leaking at the front fitting where the evap hose connects to the tank. Went to the wrecking yard and found another tank and of course, it's leaking in the same place. Ford does not make that tank anymore. I'd like to replace it with a new piece. Has anyone had any luck finding a replacement? Or may be retrofitting a newer tank that still works with the emission control stuff? It seems that the 05 up second gen tank is different than the 03-04 tank.

Help!

I thought O'Reilly and others were selling replacement tanks now.

I got mine from a salvage yard for a hundred bucks and had really good luck with it. The local Ford dealer told me they could get me one last year but it was $1000 new.

Hard to believe there aren't aftermarket ones really available in plastic or in steel for that matter. But I have had great luck using J-B Weld even on the red plastic gas tanks that have quite a rough finish to them. I always scratch up the plastic usually with a sharp razor blade with some crosshatch patterns for extra grip then I use carb cleaner to really etch into the plastic a little bit.
Seal it off nicely with J-B Weld. I prefer regular as opposed to quick. Then after that dries overnight use the ultra RTV to go over top of it and around the edges. I have sealed gas tanks like this and even the plastic intake on the 4.6 that cracks on he coolant crossover. No leaks whatsoever.

I'd keep an eye out on eBay and Craigslist Brian. Something will pop. I agree with Toby, if your gonna plastic weld it, stay with the regular JB weld. I tried the quick stuff, junk! Prep is everything. Any repair, needs a good grinding/ sanding to give glue or paint tooth to bite into substrate. Where the hell you been Brian! We need you out here.

That WAS ridiculous. I am a JB weld and plastic master.
I usually use a soldering iron to melt the cracks together then JB and RTV.

That was crazy and the owner didn't disclose it and wouldn't answer his phone. I was tempted to drop the old tank off in his driveway. Haha

Well now I can't fault him for that. I don't expect a seller of a used vehicle to disclose anything. And I fully expect all sales to be as is. Very much the same when I'm selling a vehicle. Lots of vehicles I have bought and sold I have not looked the gas tank so I may not have any idea what's going on down there as long as it's not dumping gas all of the ground each time I put fuel in it I would have no idea either. Even if I did... Old cars are old cars. And anything used is as is.
But then again I sell things at very good prices and not top dollar and I only buy things that are on the i cheaper side of what's out there for equivalent vehicles so, is common sense would dictate there may, or may not be certain things that are hidden or things that might need some attention.
Heck, most used vehicles I buy I'm just happy if I can get them home. That's the kind of deals I'm going for. Something that is body and paint interior and appearance in really really really excellent condition but at a really low price so there has to be something somewhere. I can fix the Mechanicals once I get it home.

I always disclose anything I know about a vehicle.
I have no need to steal anything, con, or cheat anybody.
Don't expect that from anybody else, just my way.

Besides I don't want some meathead showing up at night and slashing my tires.

Now you know why so many take a loss, and trade it in. A friend told me years back that buying a used car/motorcycle, your buying someone else's troubles. At $55,000 to $70,000 for new, you wonder why year after year people with means and good credit, buy it new with a warranty.

Whatever floats your boat. And your in NY....Surprising to me. See my judgemental regionalism (think racism) is kicking in.
I would not be surprised to see someone from down south say that....and its good that you are but just not common.
Every time I go to TN for a visit or trip I realize how mean I have become living in Ohio all my life.
I'm quick to be rude and expect confrontation...where most people down there are nice and sincere and not confrontational....except for a few things that are about respect or proper actions.
I understand this because my parents are form down there and my dad was a stickler for acting "proper" in public I just can't embrace it.

See a large percent of used car private sales don't happen at the house.
People move and titles have old address or so many jump title so you meet them in a parking lot....which is the preference of many people like with buying/selling on CL and FB, show them the car and if they buy it take money and sign title and give them keys.
So there is no coming to house to confront or slice tires if they are pissed about the car.
It works both ways. Sure your shouldn't hide something and rip them off. But if you are asking much less than comparable...then, many think that makes up for it. BUT some buyers would be mad and come back on you if anything happened! Even something no one could possible know about or expect. Just like bad customers in retail. Some cannot be satisfied.
So many cover their butts on used sales EVEN if they are on the up and up.

They say let the buyer beware. I am always being 'ware' or aware as much as I can...so I expect them to do the same.
Used car lots never disclose ANYTHING at least in this state.
No recourse for anythign when they are clearly marked AS IS. I would rather take my chances with private seller 100% of time since the dealers think their cars are worth more.

I bought an 86 Mustang GT back in 95. The salesman swore to the mileage being at 86k. Well after pulling the drums and rotors to check brakes, no big deal to put on a set of pads or rear shoes. Anyway I was working at a Dodge dealership at the time as a service dispatcher. I asked one of my mechanics to measure the drums and rotors, and cut them for me. He told me all 4 were out of specs, cut way too much. I confronted the lot I bought it from, and stated their vehicle was 186k, and I was going to report them to all the authorities. They refunded my money the next day. I never would buy from one of those lots again, Gypsy lots are what we called them. I'm with Toby, private party has always been my most comfortable purchases. Dealers and small lots hide too much, and charge too much!

Matt, you have a pick and pull, and LQk you pull parts wreckers in and around Houston. I'm sure they have at least 1-4 2003-04 Expeditions there. Might be worth your trouble to pack a few wrenches and sockets and hit them up this weekend.
