Winter specific wheelset setup recommendation

I have a Plat Max, with 22" wheels. And I am preparing for some snow and rain driving on the coming winter season. I am thinking of getting a set of 18" wheels, probably some take offs from a F150 (they fit exactly the same right?) and mount dedicated winter tires on them. Just wanted to ask if that's a good idea or not. Will the CCD suspension have issues with same oversize wheel but smaller rims? How to go about with TPMS relearning?

You’ll need to trim your rear axles if you want to use center caps on F150 wheels.
As long as overall diameter of the tires is the same it won’t matter.
You can buy a TPMS programmer for like $20 and reprogram yourself when you swap wheels.

Get the skinniest tire you can, they bite through the snow and grab the road surface unlike the big fat wide 22's!

On Tire Rack you can buy snow tire and rim packages. They have a great configurator specifically for winter tire and rim combos. I bought a set of cheap (but decent looking) 18" rims for my Continental with Blizzaks mounted and balanced on them already and with the correct lug nuts. They'll even sell you the Ford TPMS tool at checkout too. I really can't recommend this option enough if you want a package to bolt up with no surprises.

FYI... 18" rim size is the biggest you can get honest snow tires for. Bigger than that you get so-called winter performance tires, which aren't as good. My Continental has 20" rims from the factory, but my snow's are on 18's. They match the tire size so the circumference is the same between both sets of tires.

I’ll have to call BS on no “honest” 20” snow tires for the Expedition. Nokian makes two varieties of their Hakkapellitta line (studded and non studded) that fit the OEM 20” wheels. I opted for the non studded version. See attached post.

I don’t want to run the 22”, but I don’t want the thing to look like crap for 5 months on small 18” wheels either.

I just bought a set of new OEM 20” Ford alloy wheels with a lacquer finish & TPMS off of eBay, and a set of new Toyo Celsius tires. I didn’t want full snows because they wear fast, and the Celsius were a perfect compromise.
The wheels are brand new and a very decent price, and tires are always a choice of the buyer.

I would not worry about having full snow tires. I did the same thing with our Yukon Denali, and it was a BRUTE in the snow with all seasons.

These fit 100% perfect, caps and all. No trimming. 18" factory wheels, came off a '14 F150.

TPMS eventually recognized em without relearn, too (3rd gen '09)

Nice wheels! Since they are from a Platinum F150, you’ll have to trim the rear axle shafts on your Expy to fit the rear center caps.

It's no big deal to trim the ends of the axle shafts.

Took me less than a minute on each side with a cutoff wheel, but if you're not doing it yourself im sure whatever tire shop you take it to can do it if you ask.

Here are your ebay wheels on an F150 Platinum. You'll just need to cut an inch or so off of the rear axle shaft on your Expedition if you want to use them, which isn't a big deal. I decided to use Expedition specific wheels to avoid this issue, but many have trimmed the axle shafts in order to use F150 wheels.

That wheel look similar, but it’s not the same one. The eBay store says they were for the expedition so should require no trimming. I guess we’ll see, I’ll try the wheel on the truck before I mount the tire.

How much snow do you get? I'm not sure its worth your time and efforts in swapping these things every 6 months unless you really get a lot of snow and steady freeing temps.

Buffalo man! It’s not the snow amount, it’s the calcium chloride they use on the roads here. Really eats at the wheels. New looking 22s make the vehicle look new for years, Plus I’ll never have to buy tires again.

I roll with 18 inch steel rims and Blizzaks in the winter. Getting ready to put them on in the next few weeks.

Can you get new center caps sized for the expedition? Taking my angle grider to the axels of my brand new truck to fit some take off wheels sounds pretty extreme. For my Durango I was able to use Jeep take offs in the winter with no modification. I was hoping to do the same with the Expedition and F150 take offs that are all over Facebook marketplace.
