hey guys kinda need your help on this, this rattle noise appeared about a week ago and it sounds like a loose screw is bouncing around inside the cylinder, identical sound to if you take a rock and put it in an empty tin can and shake it.

This noise appears on cold starts and it stays there for a few minutes until it reaches optimal operating temperature.

It is an inconsistent sound (it doesn't have a rhythm)
I haven't been able to pin point exactly where it's coming from but it's loud enough that you can hear it from about 100 feet away.

Engine oil is full
5w-20 full syn. (only burns a quart every 3k miles)
Coolant is still full, it's not mixing.
Drives fine (though I feel a little lack of torque on take offs now)
No CEL or any symptoms so far just the noise.

I couldnt find a single video on YouTube that closely resembles this noise and I'm kinda on the fence on what this might be...

Any clues?

This is not a cam phaser tick as I have that consistent tick cold or hot and it's there right beside this rattle noise on cold starts

Yea I tried taking one after posting this thread but the noise wasn't there since the truck wasn't fully cooled down like it would overnight. I'll try again tonight.

Ehh OBDII port isn't working now... I swear I've never seen a car with more problems that this ford pile of crap

Edit: seeing I don't have an owners manual would any of you 2nd gen owners happen to know which fuse I should be looking for (fuse #?)

Never mind guys I found the blown fuse, I don't have a replacement 20A fuse to switch it with but for testing to be sure it's the fuse I put a 10A momentarily and that activated my scanner so that's out of the way... Now back to the chain slapping subject. I'll try to get a video tonight I just gotta let it cool down for a few hours.

Go to owner.ford.com and you can download a copy of the owners manual

Also you need to be careful as to what you plug into the lighter circuit as the OBD connection port is on the same fuse.

Yea I shorted it by placing an all metal 3/8" impact socket adapter inside it.

On with that I'll download the manual tonight at home thank you for that.

Any idea guys on what this noise might be? It's loudest in the front of the engine more so near the location of the bank 1 VCT solenoid (passenger side).

That's odd, I'll keep looking into it but I tried it on 3 different platforms and they all worked

I can't say that this is the correct answer, but I had a fuel injector make that type of inconsistent rattling noise when it failed.
Maybe try isolating the sound to one cylinder and popping the injector plug to see if it stops the sound.

It goes away when hot right! Then it could be something in the timing chain, guides or maybe even a phaser, but usually a phaser noise sounds more like a knocking noise. After engine gets hot, first remove the belt and try again to make sure is not belt related if the noise is still there then more than likely something with the timing chains.

The truck doesn't make a single tick while running without the belt installed.

Right now I have it warming up, that rattle noise was present for the first 6 minutes then it stopped, just the cam phaser tick is ongoing and that phaser tick is there all the time.

Might I remind you this truck makes both noises together when cold then the rattle disappears but phaser continues ticking

If the noise goes away with belt remove then is something that the belt turns alternator, tensioner etc .
