got my ass kicked by my travel trailer, need some advise

What is the Weight Dist hitch brand? Is the weight you quote (6500#) the factory shipping weight or the actual weight of the TT loaded (propane, batteries, your personal stuff, etc.)? Have you been to your local friendly truck scales? You should to get the real weights--your TV, your TT...

Travel Trailer fishtailed - Hitch problem? - Any advice?

TT and TV weights and hitch weight The fact that the TT whips is almost certainly a too-light hitch load. As others noted, you need around 500- 600 pounds on the hitch ball or approx 10% - 15% of the total weight of the trailer. And the fact that you have to use extraordinary methods to...

    Towing MPG?

Mine is a 2008 gas Expy w/4wd and towing package. Around town mileage = 15-16. Highway mileage = 16. Towing my travel trailer weighing 7200# I get 9 - 10 mpg. I have done nothing to the engine, etc. I have 70,000 miles on her and the towing mileage includes from east coast to Seattle...

    Am i towing too much?

Your photo makes it look like you have a really heavy tongue weight. I suggest you go to professional truck scales and weigh everything--trailer, truck, and then put the trailer wheels on ground and weigh just the weight on the tongue. That plus the mandatory door sticker will help you learn...

    expedition ?s

Lynnboy021: The Expy can easily tow 8000 pounds. Maybe not at 65 miles an hour up that really steep grade, but it's got enough juice to handle a boat unless your 23 footer is really really heavy (with the boat trailer). I tow a 30' Keystone Outback travel trailer that weighs 6000 from the...

When should I change transmission fluid 2007 Expedition

I have an 08 Expy 4wd and my tranny is sealed--when I asked about changing the fluid, he said it never needs to be done since it's sealed. I was skeptical, but he showed me that there is no dipstick to check the fluid level..

    Tow hitch removal?

Mine is welded. The weight savings seem to me to be trivial. The Expy is over 5000+ pounds, plus your load (luggage, people, etc.) and the whole frame hitch receiver and support bars probably weigh 50 - 100 pounds. IMHO, removing that will not make any difference on your gas mileage. And...

    Towing MPG?

Hi Rod: My '08 Expy EL gets 15 mpg around town. That is conditioned on not punching it between traffic lights, let the engine do some of the braking when slowing down, and so forth. Gentle is the operative word. Towing a 7100# Outback travel trailer (6100# from the factory, another 1000#...

    03 Electric brakes????

Brake controller Connector: doesn't look familiar. If you bought the Expy used, then it may be a connector for a brake controller. Many of the Expys have an empty connector in the major wiring harness behind the dash board. Crawl down on the floor with your flashlight and look up and...

    Brake controller

I concur w/etrailer. The Prodigy P-3 is a sweet little unit that mounts nicely (with two self-tapping screws) to the right of the steering column. The cable from the P-3 runs down, forward and then up into the Ford-supplied empty connector socket. I then used a few tie-ties to keep the cable...

Help Determining If I have Tow Package

I definitely concur with Racenut--run do not walk to your friendly Ford dealer with your Expy VIN and get the Parts Dept to print out the "as built" sheet from Ford. Only the dealers have access to this. This will give you every little thing on your Expy, and should be filed away with your...

    Towing Package?

At the rear, you should have two sockets with flip-top covers, one on either side of the hitch receiver. One is a flat 4 pin socket, one is a round 7 pin socket. If there is no 7 pin socket, you do not have the heavy duty towing package. The seven pin socket gives you electrical...

    Towing Capacity?

We can decode the VIN via the I'net. I Googled Ford VIN and ended at a site where I entered the VIN and it decoded it for me. But the recommendation to go to the parts dept of your friendly Ford dealer is a good one. They can tell you more than you want to know about your Ford based on...

    Brake controller power question

When not hooked to a trailer, the P3 draws a trivial amount of power -- just enough for two led lights on the front. I wouldn't worry about the P3 running down your battery unless it's a really old batt and on its last legs. And it does turn itself off after a few hours, so that helps, too.

    upgrading towing package

Adding towing package stuff What you want to do adds some significant costs. 1. bigger transmission oil cooler 2. wiring to the rear for the seven pin travel trailer (TT) connector 3. Tapping into the instrument panel wiring harness so you can plug in your TT Brake Controller. (It's...

    Tow Hooks?

They were standard on my 08 EXP EL. I would imagine you could get them for next to nothing at a junk yard. Bring a BIG socket wrench..[grin!] Unless you need to keep them off so other parts don't interfere, you probably should get them if they are cheap. You never know when you'll need to...

    towing a new tt

Here's a formula for calculating your weights. TV = Towing Vehicle TT = Travel Trailer At the truck scales, weigh: 1. TV only 2. TV with loaded hitch (the TT is hitched to the TV but only the TV wheels are on the scale) 3. full weight of TV and TT. (all wheels of the...

    towing a new tt

A "dry" trailer weighing 7350 is heavy. Add about 1000# for your "stuff". 1/2 tank of fresh water (maybe 20 gallons) adds 160 pounds, plus your propane (another 100 pounds or so), and assuming the black and grey tanks are empty, your trailer weight will be over 8600 pounds. If you travel and...
