Your job is booked at 10 hours labor, not including pulling oil pan. $100.00 hr avg plus parts. Chains, tensioner, guides, oil, etc. at least $1300.00. Guys how many hours to r&r oil pan?

Labor to r&r pan will be anywhere from 240.00 to 350.00, seems a little low. If you put them together $1600 to $1700 is about right. Find out if your guy is pulling oil pan, and putting in complete kit with guides, tensioners. Cam phasers included? Big job ahead!

Yup, big job indeed.

Time to decide how I want to proceed, shops will cost almost half what I paid for it....

It's never cheap. If you can do the job, parts. shouldn't be more than $200.00 or so. It's mostly labor.

Very true, never cheap.

I've done the timing chain on my '01 Dodge Ram (with help), which is almost easy compared to these 5.4L's.

That's true, I've worked on a lot of cars/trucks in my life. That being said, this is one of the tuffest/ temperamental. Even when experienced techs work on these, theirs always an issue from our members. Seems like it never ends. I've had mine about 2 years now, all I've done is oil/ filter changes. I did put in new air filter , thank god I didnt mess up maf sensor. I paid dealer to flush out tranny fluid last year, didn't trust anybody else around San Fran. You know it's sad that their are so many crooks out their, in a hobby that we love. Wish it wasn't so!

I just want to point out that he does not have cam phasers. That is a 2 valve engine not a 3 valve. The instrument cluster is also a 2003/2004. OP I just did timing on my 99 mustang which is the exact same as the 5.4 and it is fairly straight forward. Once you get the timing cover off it is a fairly simple process and like others have said only cost around 200 bucks to repair.

Well, to give an update, after thinking things over with the wife (it was her vehicle) we ended up just trading it in.
