Rear Axle Size

This is probably a DUMB question, but I would assume my 03 Expy has the 9.25 rear axle and not the 8.8, correct?

I am wanting to do a fluid change on both axles and the transfer case and I want to make sure I buy enough fluid the first time.

It depends, the manual states either a 8.8 or 9.75 with or with out limited slip...

Can you read the axle code off you ford motor co placard?

Use this for deciphering the axle code on the door placard. H6 is 3.73 gears, its not listed in the list for some reason. Towards the bottom has diagrams of what the different axle covers look like, you can probably use those to answer your question.

A 2003 was the first year with the Independent Rear Suspension...

It will look different from those diagrams.

I'm thinking the 8.8/9.75 went along with whether you have the 4.6 or 5.4l engine. Most likely due to engine torque.

The 4.6 was available in the Explorer with the 8.8 rear end.
