I'm thinking about ported heads next and figuring out some way to adapt a higher flowing intake too. I wonder how hard it is to adapt a 4.6 intake to the 5.4. I know there are adapter plates but what about the throttle body elbow? There is an aftermarket intake for the 4.6 that flows alot better (to match ported heads) made by professional products....

I know a lot of guys with built 5.4s, including some racers, and the intake is the biggest hurdle. I haven't found a solution, and I subscribe to a lot of forums.

The limited data I've seen indicates that a 4.6 intake with spacers to fit a 5.4 doesn't do much, and presents other problems as you note.

The only 5.4 intakes I've found are for the 32V motors. One guy is trying to make a one-off sheetmetal intake for his 2V 5.4 but he's been saying that for a long time.

It sucks...even with a blower, the intake is a huge bottleneck and simply doesn't flow, they're not made for high rpm at all. Good torque, but not HP.

The 3V intakes seem to flow a lot better. Those guys are making good power.

Thanks for all of the information gentlemen.

How well does the stock transmission, and driveshafts hold up?

I have one question. On the Allen superchargers website, their kit shows that they provide their own intake manifold and water-to-air intercooler for the 5.4. I'm curious how much better it flows and whether it could be converted to work with other setups. What do ya'll think?

What do you means by "how much better it flows"?

Compared to what?

Converted? Well, Allen is one of the few supercharger setups that is actually an all inclusive kit. It does include a replacement manifold/plenum. And it is intercooled. But converted to other setups? What other setups?

Roots & twin-screws need a new intake plenum by design, because the supercharger sits on top of the engine, between the banks of the V.

Lightning intakes can obviously make good power, and the aftermarket intakes for these kits are somewhat similar.

Naturally-aspirated, turbo & centrifugal guys are pretty much stuck with the factory intake manifold.

I've got an E4OD and it's pretty stout. As are the 4R100s. These drivelines hold up pretty well, I'd get a valve body and tranny cooler for sure with a blower.

Green can tell you about axles on the newer trucks with IRS...yikes.
But the older trucks with solid axles...these are very tough.

As long as you keep the torque management on for the shifts in the calibration the IRS rear end will live just fine......

This will help us to let you know what kind of power to expect. Newer trucks, especially the 3-valve motors, make a lot more power than older trucks like mine that have the NPI motor.

I run a Procharger. It's an efficient compressor, and when combined with an intercooler the intake temps are very close to ambient.

There are a lot of factors to consider with blowers.

Centrifugals like a Procharger make power up top becuase they needs revs for boost. This keeps stresses on the driveline to a minimum, relatively speaking. Some people think these blowers feel soft because they aren't used to revving their engines.

Other blowers (roots like a Lightning, or a twin-screw like a Whipple) make a lot of low-end boost. These tend to feel faster because power comes on at lower RPM, and most folks prefer this sort of power.

You can't go wrong with any of them.
