20" Tire Replacement

Good Morning Everyone,

I know this subject has been bantered around quite a bit but I am struggling with the decision on replacement tires. Last winter I picked up an '07 EB with the 20" option. Still trying to get it dialed in.

The usual middle age dad driving. I expect good to great winter mountain performance and I rarely shy away from the faint, squigly line on the map. Nothing technical, it is a stock Expedition of course, but I take the kids off-road.

The problem is there is a lot of pavement between here and there. What is the hot recommendation? Looking to buy this week. Driving to CO at the end of the month.

How far and how much off-roading do you do? Nitto Terra Grapplers are very common around here. I am thinking of going with Nitto Trail Grapplers. I love the look and they do well off-road.

Thanks. The Terra Grappler had been recommended to me. My vacations almost always involve a backcountry adventure. At this stage and with this vehicle it will probably be limited to Forest Service and logging roads. Some two track but only if I am pretty certain of the condition. Hate to have my kids out pushing and hi-lifting the Expedition...

Anyone with experience with the Nitto?

Lots of experience with Nitto, in a variety of sizes but never a 20 inch. Can't say anything bad about them, I keep buying them.

Any recommendations for best all-around asphalt tire? Only 62,000 miles on my Expy and I'm ready for my 4th set! Want to go for something with much longer treadlife.

The goodyear wrangler silentarmors are pretty awesome for general use and light to medium off road stuff. Had a set on my Non-expi and they went for around 40000 miles with rotation. Never got stuck, but I didn't try anything stupid either.

i have the nitto terra grapplers and they are great. you cannot go wrong with them. i took them to mammoth and they did well before i put the chains on. with the chains on the rear, the front felt super planted and stable. i do a lot of highway driving as well, los angeles to vegas usually and i have 40,000 miles on the tire and i looks like i have about 20,000 miles left in them. i actually want them to wear out faster so that i can upgrade to 22s

I have Nitto Terra Graplers on my F-250 Diesel and they are good off road and quite on road.

i love my cooper zeon LTZ's in 275/55 20. i'm on my second set now. great all around tire on road/off.

I have had many sets of the BFG all terrain, they generally last about 50,000, they do good on and off road but they are expensive.

I have a set of Goodyear wranglers but there a bit taller the the stock ones on the 20 mines are 275/65/20 and they sit nice in the wheel well and are smooth on road and off

Can you adjust something in the computer so that doesn't throw off your speedometer/odometer? Or is it not that big of a difference?

I have BFG all terrains, they are expensive but in my opinion worth it. They do good on the road and good at the ranch. They have always lasted a long time for me, 40,000+ on my other trucks. Only have 15000 on my expy so far but no complaints.

I can't say there's a difference in the speedometer with me at least. even tho the tires I'm running arn't much bigger than the recommend 275/55/r20 my wranglers are 275/65/r20 and it feels the same. but I'm sure that with a programer you can input tiresize to adjust.

Charly, Are you running a lift/level or stock height? I have a 2010 with stock 275/55/r20's. I will be installing the Rancho Quicklifts soon, and I'd like to go up to the 275/65/r20 but I cant find anyone else running that size tire. If you are running them with stock height, I am sure I'll probably be fine with the Quicklifts.

For the price nittos are and how durable they are. I wouldn't second guess on buying them again

The nitto trail grappler is great. I got 50k+ on 2 sets of them in a 35" on my fullsize chevy. I have the Goodyear wrangler duratraks on the expy and they're good too. Only 15k on them now so I can't speak for longevity. The best bang for buck would be the nittos. It is a good semi aggressive sorta quiet tread. I have become a label ***** for goodyear. 33.5" Duratraks on the expy, 35" Kevlar muds on the '96 sas chevy, and 37" military goodyears on the 2000 sas chevy.
