Hey all, just thought I would chime in, bought a 97 yesterday and love it. Left the jeep family for something bigger.

I searched and noticed alot of lifted expys with t's on the front and spacers on the rear, I wanna lift mine around three inches.

How hard is the front to actually do the torsion bars?

Thanks for any help.

semperfi96, welcome my brother in arms. As for installing the torsion bar keys, it can be easy, it can be hard. It really depends on where the truck has been driven and how much rust you are going to run into on the underside of the truck. PB Blaster and a BFH is going to be your best friends for something like this. To do this job, this is how I would handle it:

-Squirt the bolts for the torsion bar adjusters, the hex joint where the torsion bar meets the key, and the other end where the torsion bar meets the lower A-arm.
-Measure (or count the threads) the bolts on each side for the adjusters so you know where to restore the bolts to so you keep the truck level.
-Put the front of the truck up in the air supporting the truck by the frame (not the lower A-arm) on jackstands.
-back off the bolts for the adjusters till the keys are just above the block that the bolts run through
-use a large C-Clamp and take up a little load of the key
-remove the bolt the rest of the way and then slide out the bar the bolt ran through
-back off on the c-clamp and remove the tension off of the torsion bar.
-spray the ends of the torsion bar again with PB Blaster
-Using a large punch and a hammer (the bigger the better), remove the torsion bar from the end up at the A-arm, then remove the torsion bar from the key.

From here, reverse the steps and reinstall everything. You will find installing the keys is going to be a little more difficult since you will need to put more preload on the torsion bars due to the new keys. But, not that bad overall.

As or the rear spacers, the steps are as follows:
-place the rear of the truck up on jack stands with the jackstands on the frame of the truck.
-place a jack under the pumpkin of the rear axle and apply a little bit of upward force (move the axle up about 1/2"
-remove the tires from the axle to allow it to drop (or you could have initially set the jackstands up where the rear tires were about 4+" off of the ground).
-undo the lower mounts on both shocks and disconnect the shocks from the axle
-lower the jack down some to lease the pressure on the coils, once loose, remove the coils from the truck and continue to lower the axle down another 3" or so to account for the coils and spacers for reinstall.

At this point, reverse the sequence and you are done. It may be advisable to get different shocks since you will not have a high chance of maxing out the shocks, leading to potential damage to the shocks since your truck will be sitting higher. Depends on how much 4x4ing you do.

Granted, could have saved you a lot of time, you could have bought my truck. It already has a 4" lift and 37" mud tires on it. I don't have the need for an SUV any more (kids have moved out of the house), so, I am moving on to something a little bit different. What that will be is hard to say. Got 3 different paths I am looking at for the moment.

Thanks for the info guys. Sounds like a weeks worth of pb blaster is needed for me. I really didnt mean to buy this truck, It was just such a great deal I couldnt pass it up. I have lights and a roof rack for it already from my jeep days and many other parts.

A friend needed money so 1500 bucks and drove it home with everything working on it.

Semper, take it out 4x4ing before you start doing all the mods. I think you will find the truck very capable, especially if you have the LS rear end. I lifted mine because I hated looking like everyone else and was one of the first to step up to 35's. But, shortly after I put on 35's, it seemed like a lot of other people stepped up to 35's too. Hence why I have pushed the limits of what a 4" lift can do on a truck like this. I have 37's now and you can't go any bigger unless you do some serious sheetmetal work (which I have contemplated so I could run 40's).

Took it this weekend, was very impressed at what a stock truck could do that was so heavy on street tires. I'm not looking to go bigger than 33's due to I travel alot and wanna keep a tiny bit of mpg.

Just kinda what you said, it looks like every other blue expy on the road right now.

semper, I am still able to pull 13 mpg with my 37's. Granted, I get 13 whether I am in town, on the highway, got 8 people in the truck or just me. Seems to be a solid number. About the only way I can make it shift is if I am hard on the gas light after light, after light.

The big thing that I will tell you is if you are looking to maximize your mileage, do some calculations and determine which VSS gear you need to install into the tranny when you change the tire size. When I went from the stock 29" tires to the 35's, I lost about 4 mpg (even after correction for the speedo error), but I gained 2 of it back by simply changing out the VSS gear to make the speedo correct again. The gear is like $8 through Ford and takes all of about 15 minutes (if you are really slow) to install. To install, find the VSS gear, remove a single 8mm bolt, pull out the VSS sensor, remove a clip on the end, pull off the old gear, slide on new gear and reverse the process.

If you need ideas on how to maximize your mileage, let me know. I have done all sorts of playing with my truck and can tell you just about every trick there is.

If you are worried about fuel economy.

You can do the Gotts Mod for $5 ( DIY )
Find a programmer ( Craigslist )
Jet Chip or Edge Chip ( Craigslist )
unrestricted exhaust system
Better plugs and coils ( Coils I recommend getting from amazon )
( Take out any unnecessary weight ( 3rd row, roof rack etc etc )

Just most important keep it tuned up, with my current setup I have 19/20 highway, 16/17 City, and thats with 285/70/18s.. When I first bought mine it had 2 coils going bad I filled up $85 premium drove 176 miles, stopped to top off the take it only held $17.32 thats 5.3 gallons not bad for a 8 cylinder firing on 6 with no mods

Thanks for the heads up on Amazon, just ordered a full set of coils for the price of one at the local box stores. Nice! I just hate how long it takes to do the plugs on the 5.4..........

Just remember go a step above factory on plugs dont go to the extreme you can cause more harm than good.. stock plugs are platinum, one step above that you are fine....

well I bought platinum should I return and upgrade

Thats your call. I never put factory back in, any of my vehicles. Always go a step above, They will help in mpg in the long run, I spent $52 for 8 Bosh +4s which was 60 cents more than stock at AutoZone.

Also make sure you are very patient when installing those or you may have the infamous plug blow out. Thats on any plug btw..
