I think as long as they pass the emissions test, and the truck is not running really bad I would not worry about them. What makes you think they are clogged?

Cat replacement

I replaced mine at 125k.... Right side only. In CA you must have them no exceptions... and if you really follow the law ( and I will if I can afford it) in CA you have to use state approved CATs (typically factory oem) it will run you about $1600 per bank for the CAT assembly alone! Damn air Nazis. I will probably do the left bank this summer if they last. Cant wait to get the hell out of CA.

building doc. thats why you find a good smog person that shows you how to pass the tests. i have seen people pass smog with aftermarket cats. and remember you can only replace the cats when they go bad

Mine where bad at 120,000. Even bad they can pass a pressure test. Mine were breaking down inside and the front converter that was bad was clogging the rear converter and on the other side the rear converter was bad and was blowing chunks into the muffler. The two bad ones were almost hollow when I finally got mine replaced.

I didnt have to smog it yet. They guy just checks to see if you have the cats. Issue here is getting someone to sell you a cat!.. Thete are two types of cats, 49 state and CA legal. It is rediculous. The price is 10 more but no physical difference at all except for a CARB stamp.

How to get around it is I bought some online, shipped them to a buddy, then he shipped them to me. Got 2 cats for $160 and recyled my old ones for 80 and you have install them on your own. Nobody will put them on for you, so you better know how to mig or arc weld.

Im not much in "snake oil" however autozone and most parts stores carry a product called "Guaranteed to make it pass" by a company called CRC. I had a 81 Ford pick up in Tennessee and when I bought the truck the previous owner told me it would not pass emission and he didnt have the money to fix it, thats why he was selling it so cheap. He gave me the emission test and I could have it retested for free. So, it didnt run bad at all...so I bought a bottle of this stuff for $11.00 put it in the tank drove it to the emissions place and it passed with flying colors....did it on another vehicle that had NO cats at all, poured that stuff in and BINGO..passed again....oh I bought the truck for 1200.00 and sold for 3650.00

I heard if you run the tank down to almost nothing and put in about 2 quarts of rubbing alcohol and you can get similar results. never had a vehicle with emissions issues so never had to try it. and here in CA im not sure I want to take that chance. they are all over these smog guys if they are shady... huge fines and possible jail time, so im not even sure I have the guts to even try to fool with them.
