Tuners need to be connected?

New to Expy tuning.

Do the various tuners need to stay connected to work?

They are a bit costly for me.

I am curious if tuning can be done as a service instead of buying.

I bought a 2001 Sheriff Interceptor.
Not sure if it is factory setting now or not.

Just looking to save gas. (Will be checking the 2011 version of Gotts mod is needed this weekend)

"Tuners" or "Programmers" are essentially the hardware which stores multiple programs which may be "flashed" to your pcm.

No they do not have to remain connected but the way they are sold today each programmer is locked to a particular vehicle until the vehicle is returned to stock. This is how they make their money. Most have misc extra functions such as code reader, clear cels, and monitor misc engine parameters in real time.


While I am certain it could be done, it is just not marketed that way. At least I am unaware of any tuning services that can program your pcm without you first purchasing a "flash device" (hardware).

Sniper and HP Tuners are two that I know of that don't require a hand held device. They flash straight to the ECU. However you're either paying for the software or for a tuner to do the work. Either of which can easily be as much or more then just a hand held tuner.

hand helds don't...but if you have an ecm programmer like the type JET Performance offers it stays in place
