Talk about feeling inept. I popped the hood on my 98 expedition expecting to see spark plugs, spark plug wires and the coils. I'm not seeing ANY of these things. Where are they...hidden?

My 94 Lincoln Mk VIII has the 4-coils-per-bank mounted at the front of the heads/valve covers with the plugs going thru the center of the valve covers and the plug wires fairly visible for each cylinder.

Granted, my Lincoln has a 32-valve DOHC. A bit different from the Expedition. But where are these items on the 5.4L.

HELP!!!

Well, there are no plug wires, so it isn't just you.

There are coils (one per cylinder) directly on top of each bank of cylinders, each coil has a couple of bolts that hold them in. The plugs are below them.

the coils are held on by either a 8 or a 10 mm mini bolt, hightly recomend spraying them, then slowly removing, if you hit a tight spot turn back in a little spray again and back out, or move to next one and come back to it, they break easy, you will also need a thin wall plug socket with a rubber seal in it, the plugs are down inside the head, and may be a pain to get out if you drop it, and do not break the bolt insert on the coil, they need to be secure, i had water issues on 3 of them, couse the coil and seal were allowing water into the plug port. NOTE:::::::: you also ONLY have 3 threads to hold the plug in, do _NOT_ sprip the plug, or the hole, it will blow out, couseing you to 1) sound like a harley, 2) break the coil, 3) have to put in a helicoil, and thats time consuming and if you have never done one, hmmm at least 2 hrs in a shop @72 dollors an hr, thank god im my own machanic
