So my ol' potato has an elusive coolant leak. It drinks about 1 gallon every 10 days or so. I've added UV dye trying to stick a fork in this potato but it has shown up nadda! I don't know where it's coming from but I do know where it's not coming from.
*No indications of head gasket failure - no puff of smoke - no shining cylinders - no UV dye at the tail pipe.
*No coolant in the tranny fluid
*No coolant in oil
*No coolant from pump weep hole
*No coolant from any hose
*No smell or indication of coolant inside at the heater core.
*No nothin' to be perceived anywhere.
I've shined the UV flashlight up down, all around... nothin! Yet the beast still sips it's brew.
You want more strangeness? Okay...I made sure to not spill a single drop of UV dye when I put it in the coolant bottle. The only time I did see anything was a little drop at the screw hole that mounts the bottle to the frame. The screw screws into solid plastic and into the metal. Now how did that happen without leaving some other trace? "It's a Ford!" Despite that mystery I don't think it merits further investigation since a drop is not a gallon and I'm losing it regularly.
Now I know I've come across some stuff in the past saying there's a coolant line under the intake manifold and that's my best guess at this point. That it's leaking and quickly getting evaporated by pooling on top of the hot motor and going bye-bye without a trace... if that's even possible - I mean it's antifreeze after all with a higher boiling point. But my wife and I sometimes notice a stench - possibly of putrifying antifreeze from the beast getting regurgitated.
Now before someone says pressure test it - I've had it pressure tested before and nothing came up. This was back in late november.
This one has had me stumped for a while because this whole vehicle is a cluster of intermittent issues - including coolant loss! LOL What the heck? Who ever heard of...nevermind... it's a ford.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Brian
