Recently had a steering fluid leak at upper hose next to radiator, not sure if this causing trouble, but steering fluid went everywhere. Then a couple months later engine started to overheat while idling for extended periods. Once driving temps go back down in pretty short order, like within couple minutes. Replaced thermostat and still having the problem. Checked fuses today and both electric fan fuses were blown. Inspecting the electrical connections at the fans and they seem covered in black liquidy crap, possibly steering fluid. Would I just swap out whole fan assembly? Or test it for functionality? Possibly something else?
Engine overheating only while parked and idling.

Test the fans and connector for power before replacing them.
As electric motors age, they start drawing more current than when new. I imagine that the power steering fluid didn't help much. The fuses were blown. Barring a short, that likely indicates that the motors are drawing much more current than they should. If that is the case, replacement is the only real option. Before you run out and buy them, I would break apart the Molex connector and visually inspect the contacts. That connector may also need replacement. On my old Grand Marquis, the fan had drawn so much current that the contacts in the Molex plug were badly burned and the plastic housing partly melted. When the new fan was installed, it would not run 100% of the times needed because of the less than perfect connection.
Run the A/C on high. That should cause the fans to start in a short time, whether the engine is warm or not.

If your fan at low and high speed,after t-stat opens,ac on high etc.. make sure p.s. fluid didn't spray all over the rad.
causing the the cooling fins to plug up w/dust and dirt. easy remedy is some sort of h.d. degreaser(castrol makes a good product,its purple) spray on let set for a while,do this when its cooled down, and rinse w/plane water and garden hose and rinse from the opposite direction of airflow. Just a thought.

Thank you for the reply! I’m slow to get this remedied as I dislocated my shoulder and have not been able to do anything at all. Really quite terrible. I will do the a/c test as that won’t require any shoulder work. Appreciate the thoughts you had about my truck. Will also be getting some assist to swap out ignition coils and spark plugs as those have started going as well.
