About to make the jump from a 2015 GMC Yukon XL to 2019 Ford Expedition Max (Limited or Plat). I've always been GM guy (owned a 2003 tahoe, 2007 Suburban, 2011 Suburban, 2015 Yukon XL) in personal life and work vehicles have always been fords(super-dutys and 150's). Never thought I'd spend my personal money on a Ford...lol But these new Expedition Max's are pretty nice!

I have 4 teenage kids that are and will be over 6' so not exactly small kids. They all complain about leg room behind 2nd row now in GMC so I took them down to sit in a new Max. They all agree leg room is better but I'm concerned about head room(almost touching). Anyone have feedback or is this just a trade off? Also, storage behind 3rd row seems less?

Those are my two big hang ups at moment, anyone else been in similar boat?

Thanks.

Yes. But there is 2” of additional leg room in 3rd row. Who knows what the new Yukon’s/suburbans will have for space. Their specs haven’t been announced yet.

Rear seats recline so that will help the head room and my understanding is that there is slightly less storage behind the third row.

You get more headroom with a solid roof. Stronger, too.

That's a great point...that makes sense. The headliner is lower because of the sun roof.
Thanks!

Never had a passenger back there complain about headroom. Stated before, they can recline which adds about 2 in of headroom and increases leg room as well. As far as carfo room behind the third row, there shouldnt be any reason you can't put the same amount of belongings in either truck, though the expy will take more tetris work.

I have a 6 foot 6 son, and there was no way he was going to fit in the second row of a MAX with a sunroof ......so we had to find one without a sunroof. But there is indeed plenty of legroom for him in the second row with the seat all the way back

That's good. Your roof rack capacity is much higher, too. I hate sunroofs.

I thought this would be the case too since I prefer the additional headroom over the sunroof. However, even without the sunroof, the headliner has substantial contours in the Expedition, perhaps to permit HVAC ducting in the ceiling, etc. My recollection was the the 3rd row area especially was no different on headroom with or without the sunroof, but I'd recommend sitting in both to see for yourself.

Thanks Scottorama. My 14 yr old son is 6'2 and still going. All 3 of my boys will "likely" be over 6'3.

I have the dealer now looking for Max Limited or Platinum without sunroof - but I have a feeling there won't be any... Did you have to order one?

You cant get a platinum without the sunroof. The limited can be had without the sunroof, but it will be extrememly hard to find without ordering it and it will lock you out from some of the desirable features as well. My nephew is 6'4", hes been in both rows and hes never complained about headroom and thats with the moonroof. If anything, i open the shade if hes in the sec row, opening the shade gives you about 2in more head room. He reclines the seat in the third row if he needs to but if he cant hes still been good. Def try both if you cant but im sure itll be less of an issue than you think.

I don't think you can order a Platinum with the roof.

I bought a Navigator Select loaded with every option but a sunroof. I did not want the sunroof. I had to special order it. I believe all 2020 Navigators have sunroofs.

The expy roof is ‘stronger’ or are you saying a roof without a sunroof is stronger?

The solid roof is stronger. The panoramic moonroof decreases the roof rack capacity significantly.

Moon roofs are a love/hate thing. My last XLT didn’t have the moonroof and I was fine with it. My Eddie Bauer has it and I use it here and there. It is nice on those cool summer nights and it does add some light to the cab. Besides that meh, I could go back to not having it. Between the DVD system and moonroof there is def less headroom than what I had in my XLT.

I had to stay in the XLT's to get one without a sunroof. Found one on a dealer lot that was 13,000 of sticker, so that helped too. It is possible to special order a Limited without a sunroof, you most likely will not find one on a dealer lot without a sunroof. Platinum is not possible to get without a sunroof.

I made the same jump back in March (2016 Yukon XL to 2018 Max Limited). I looked for months for a Limited or Platinum without the sunroof in a 200 mile radius around my house and didn't find a single one, so I just sucked it up and got one with it.

My reasons for making the jump were actually predicated on towing, and the engine/transmission doesn't disappoint on that front. My kids are only 4'10" at this point, but they are far happier with the 3rd row in the Expy than they were in the Yukon. There is noticeably less room behind the rear seat in this one, though. It's not poor by any means, but it is certainly smaller.

The biggest things I miss from the Yukon was the brake feel and the rear leveling suspension. It just helped the vehicle feel more planted. That said, the more I drive the Expedition, the more I have appreciated the ride in it.

I think congratulations are in order. I came from a GM family, and bought my new Chevy in 1982. After 18 service calls and 9 part calls (Yes, 27 trips to the dealer, pre-lemon laws) in the first 16 months I told the Zone Rep I was done. “But it’s your car” and let us look at it again, for the last 6 escalated service visits. I told him I would go through the Better Business Bureau with binding arbitration, but if they made me do that I would curse GM until the day I die. He would not help me. They had not lost a case locally prior to me winning my case. I have held up my end of the bargain for 36 years, costing them hundreds of sales. We switched to Ford And have never regretted it. My extended family knows that no GM vehicle can be parked in my driveway. LOL So, congratulations, and welcome to the family! I am 6’3” and can easily ride in the third row of our 2018 Expedition with a sunroof.
