Up for first oil change on my 2019 FX4. Does anyone know what oil is best for this engine?

You're going to get about 2 dozen different answers on this one, and likely a bunch of references from Blackstone and BITOG. I personally just use the manufacturer-speced Motorcraft synthetic blend and change every 5000-6000 miles. From what I have read, it's a pretty highly-regarded oil and the price is very competitive on Amazon.

One note for you during the process: I have yet to figure out how to get the filter off without dripping oil all over the subframe. This car is the most frustrating I have had in the last 10 in that regard. Also, make sure the engine is warm and the fill cap is off when you drain the oil, or it is very slow on this engine.

Have fun!

And if you ask what is the best oil filter to use, get ready..........

How frequent should you change oil, and what is the break in period?

I went full synthetic Mobil 1 5w-30 and change it when the oil life indicator reaches 0% which is in 10,000 mile intervals for my driving.

I couldn’t find anything about synthetic or not. Most oils now are some version of synthetic. As long as its the right weight and a quality oil it should be fine. I say that but I have one oil I avoid now. Mobil 1 yrs ago they changed from their high quality Euro standard to a very cheap blend. My VW at the time went from 1quart every 5000 to 4quarts every 3000. In one oci. I switched to cheveron oils and it went back to roughly 1quart every 5000. My Sequoia did the same thing only it went from zero needed to 4 quarts in 5000.

So if you use Mobile 1 carry spares.

Yup. They lost their BMW certification when they changed the euro formula.

Go full synthetic. Your cam phasers will thank you!

I haven’t had any issues over 2 changes with Mobil 1 in the expy. The penzoil plus is a good synthetic if you don’t want to use the Mobil 1.

The Mobil 1 has reviews on the EB engine as the quietest on a hugely popular oil forum. So there’s that....

I use Valvoline full synthetic change at 5k. Full synthetic is superior. I may go to amzoil. The big issue is the filter. I use wix. Never use fram anymore.

Mobil 1 5w-30 with Mobil 1 oil filter every 5k miles and change the oil drain plug every 3 change. Blackstone oil analysis have been good. Speaking of, I’m in need of another change. Just hit 60K.

I just buy the 3 oil change package at the dealership for $99.00. I think they use a fomoco bulk blend. If something happens to the engine I would just say. You guys are the last one to touch it.

The US service specifies a synthetic blend. Mexico service specifies a full synthetic. Either let the Ford service do it, as @Fozzy says, or use a reputable brand full synthetic (cost difference between full and semi is negligible) and a reputable filter.

Turbocharger bearings is where oil takes a beating due to the heat produced and the oil in the bearing area getting cooked after shutdown. I always recommend a full synthetic due to its higher resistance to heat and coking. Brand is not usually as critical since most oils meet Fords specifications. Since I have to do a lot of oil changes, I will typically use Mobil1 since it is available at Costco for $28 a case of six on sale. Napa will occasionally put their synthetic house brand(made by Valvoline) on sale for under $4 per quart.

The manual references a Ford spec ending in “B1”. This spec requires a formulation to help reduce occurrence of LSPI (Google it) in turbo engines. Most of the Mobil 1 products do NOT meet that spec, or at least have not been certified to do so. I went with the Motorcraft full synthetic. Picked it up from Rock Auto for about the same price as the blend locally even after shipping.

Bought a 19 in November, only have 2K miles on it but I'll be using Mobil 1 when it comes time to change. $28 for 6 quarts at Costco...why not for that price?

I use Penzoil Ultra Platinum Synthetic 5w30 every 6k miles. It has been great with most of my other cars. Amazon and WM have the sale around $20 a jug.

I know RTFM, but i assume it's 5 quarts or a little over to compensate for the oil filter?

Also, anyone experience having to add oil before the next oil change?
