Going To Attempt Installation of iTBC in A 2011 Expy

Refer to the two diagrams below. That's all which appears to be different between the 2011 MY Expys and the 2013 in regards to the integrated trailer brake control that came pre installed starting with the 2013 MY. I need to know if anyone else has ever attempted to run the 3 non-existent wires in the pre-2013 (and post 2009) MY Expy, and fiddled with either ******** or IDS to see if iTBC can be activated.

I do have a 2013 cluster with me, which is a cheater's way of getting it to work--but I really don't want this project to go that route. BTW: the 2013 cluster WILL get your iTBC working, but you'll have to F with the EEPROM to get the mileage within the legal limits (will still work without correcting the mileage though)

Just need to know if any of you fine blokes have tried to activate the iTBC with the pre 2013 cluster before I go ahead and waste a bunch of time.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question. But the wiring for a brake controller is there under the dash already. Doesnt matter if you have the integrated brake controller that comes with the newer models or not. Looks like they were nice enough to add a relay into the newer ones so the connection is not hot all the time. (If I'm interpreting that correct anyway).

The TBC on 2013+ work in conjunction with the truck's sway control. Braking intensity is also logically calculated. Pre 2013 Expys have a pesky underdash harness that is not connected to the truck's ride management system.

Bought one for my 2014 Expy years ago, and I still have it. Never got around to installing it, and so, the 2011 Expy will get it.

You really need to fix your spelling checker (unless you're doing this deliberately). I'm guessing you mean FORScan.

I thought I read messages here that noted the integrated brake controller in the dash just plugged into the connector under the dashboard.

Pre-2013 ones have a 4 wire setup in a 6 pin connector that is specifically there for aftermarket brake controllers (no OEM controller was offered for those model year trucks). 2013+ have a 7 wire setup in a 14 pin connector that is tapped into the high-speed CAN. Only the latter can accept an OEM brake controller and is considered an integrated setup, since it is directly connected to the truck's stability & sway control system through CAN. BTW: installing an aftermarket TBC in a 2013+ is still not an integrated brake controller setup.

I will post an update on this in the coming week, since I'm waiting on some Yazaki crimp-on terminals to arrive.

Update on this: if your ABS module was ever replaced with a new unit on your pre-2013 Expy, then there's a tonne of hope for a successful retrofit. The ones that came with the truck straight from the factory just aren't built to react to the CAN messages from the TBC. In summary, the original unit doesn't have any programming to deal with trailer sway, and other trailer-related messages from the TBC.

I will have more to add to this thread in the coming weeks. I'm currently sniffing CAN packets to understand if an EEPROM flash on the original ABS module is a feasible solution.

At this point this project has already turned into something an ordinary DIYer wont partake in if they value their time. However, I don't give a funk. I'll keep at it.

Any updates? I’ve wired a 2014 tbc into my 2012. See the tbc in forscan (only when I Tell it to use 2014 mykey). Made some adjustments to my IC as built and reset DTCs. No issues.. however, no gain control on dash. Trailer sway is listed, but I think the 2012 already had that. I’m not getting anything out the blue wire from the tbc. Not with brake, or manual override. Have not attached trailer, have not tried while in motion.
