2007-2014 Expeditions all use the BorgWarner Torque on Demand (BW TOD) tranfer case system. ‘07-‘14 Expeditions TOD transfer case uses a specialized microprocessor (computer) in the transfer case that senses and can predict slippage before it occurs based on conditions monitored every millisecond in 4A mode. In 4A torque is variable and sent where needed via the cases brain. When you put it into 4H or 4L the transfer case computer locks it up 50/50 torque split front and rear with high or low range and no longer varies output. You have manually taken over its job and told it to lock everything up (needed in mud or rock crawling). This is good for severe conditions where slip can occur but on dry asphalt will result in binding of the driveline.

I've driven both the 1st Generation and the 3rd Generation trucks off road for work as a railroad trainmaster. I didn't own the trucks and they were considered emergency vehicles so I drove them wherever I needed to respond without too much consideration for their - er - well being.

I never got stuck with either truck in logging over 250,000 miles. I found the 1st Generation trucks much more nimble, responsive, a lot faster and more fun to drive off road. But both did the job wonderfully and other than flattening a dozen cheap government-bought tires, I never broke anything.

The only modifications on the trucks were Ford skid plates and the running boards removed.

Trainmaster, now that’s a cool job.

An old-school job for an old railroad and mechanical buff who doesn't mind long hours...

The Fords handled it well. First Generation trucks were inexpensive with the SSV Package and the 5.4... The 3rd Generations had the SSV package with the running boards removed so you could hop over railroad rails... Carried 600 lbs of steel crap in the backs. I still hear it clamoring in my sleep.

I have the FX4 package on my 2020 and it does come with a rear locker; haven't had a chance to take it off road yet.

I believe I read recently, that the new FX4 will have locking diffs, lift , tires, skid plates, and I’m sure, a shitload of electronics. Thanks for the likes. I think I’m gonna need to upgrade to those truetracs, I got into a little wash in Mojave, and got 2 tires spinning and digging in the sand, was able to back up and gas it thru. Those truetracs sound nice to have. Do you need to purchase gears separately for those truetracs??? I need to re gear, and getting bigger tires, I have 33 on now, probably gonna do 37-38.

Nice looking rig! One other thing to consider that helps is if while off-roading put on 17" with 35" (you could probably fit 37" or 38" )so you can air down more. My second set of tires was 33" A/T when I went to 35" R/T on 17" and was able to air down to 20PSI made the truck much more capable.

I can’t do little wheel, mine are 20”, i know I sacrifice a little, but looks way better. I didn’t even think to air down, I got deflaters too. Wasn’t that bad. Got the rest of the rock lights don’t today, also a new sub box, got a bunch left to do.
