Guess I’ll leave my cargo mat out for next Monday when mine goes in for them to look at this.

So sorry to keep beating this topic to death, but has anyone who had this problem that took it to the dealer to be fixed know if they just replaced the switch and if it's been working ever since or not?
Reason I ask is my dealer is small and has only sold I think 4 or 5 of these, and 3 were in the past 3 months (when I bought mine) so they don't have a lot of experience with them.
Thanks in advance!

(It's starting to really piss the wife off with getting the dogs in and out so guess I better get it fixed! :) )

Ours is doing the same thing as well. It just comes and goes when it works...kind of like our sunroof shade that opens on its own. ‍♂️ Haven’t been back to the dealer for awhile tho. The dealer is an hour away, and it’s same as traded off for a new one anyway.

My 2018 Limited had the same issue (stuck/sticking lift gate button - the one you press to close an already open lift gate). Dealer fixed under warranty, been working as normal for about 1 week thus far.

Ours started sticking again within a couple weeks of it being replaced. Will have it looked at again at the next oil change.

Interestingly, if you press the "ridge" right around the button (the right side) right after you hit the button, it usually works. If your button is already 'stuck' then you might have to push the side first to get it to pop up, then hit the button, then hit the ridge again. 80% of the time works every time!

I think it has nothing to do with the switch, but more with its mounting.

Tailgate button replaced, all works perfect now!

I can never get the handsfree to work! I kept trying in the driveway (luckily I was backed in so the neighbourhood didn't see me doing the hokey pokey with my Expy)! Tried the "straight kick in" , the "wanderer" , the "low and slow" , even the "backside donkey kick" ! Damn thing just doesn't want to work! Tried it on both sides, the middle, I have the tow package, so it shows on the side , but nothing! Every once and a while it would open, but when trying to replicate, never worked.

So my question, what is the TSB quoted on your work order? Thanks!

StealthyBulldog may be on to something there...

I note in the repair notes from when mine was fixed the tech stated, "...Removed switch from panel - operates as designed. Found trim panel cut wrong. Requires new interior liftgate trim panel. R+R panel. Operation checks okay. Cleared DTCS. Ran RGTM self test - pass."

So I went it to try this and once I figured out where exactly to push it it almost works flawlessly!

This is happening to mine now as well so I’m finding this technique very helpful and this thread amusing.

I actually stopped in and was talking to my dealer and told him I would have to get it in. Told him I figured it was the trim piece and he said he would just order both a button and trim piece. I said i was just thinking it's the trim, but he figured he'd order both just in case. Honestly I kinda just wanted to try altering the trim piece myself so I could report back to the forum what to do!! :)

I have the weathertech cargo mat and no button issue. I do run through a works car wash a few times a week and don’t live in a dusty or wintery area. I’m betting it’s more of a fine grime issue getting through the weather stripping between the lift gate and the body. Has anyone taken it apart or tried hitting it with compressed air?

I’ll put some air to it tomorrow and see what happens. Mine has only just started to act up so I may not be a good barometer to judge the air on. I have the weather tech may as well but I’ve never seen any dirt beyond the weather stripping.

I’ve noticed some fine particles in between the valleys of the weather stripping that I have to blow out about once a week. The car wash I go to has the free vacuums and compressed air hoses.

Had my 2019 Expedition for 2 weeks now. 1 week in i just could not press the button to close it. Guess it was stuck. Tried to close from the button on the dash, and it wouldn't work either. Kept pushing the lift gate button and it eventually worked. Happened a couple more times that same day. Of course it's been working just fine this morning when i went to the dealer and he said to come back when it's sticking again.

Have had same problem. Decided to try WD40 - sprayed it around the crack between button and the trim. After a thorough bath of WD40 to get the grit out, works again. Took only a couple minutes. Not sure if WD40 will damage the switch over time, but for now problem seems to be solved.

If it’s still under warranty can get it replaced. Had mine replaced a month ago. Works well now, I think they updated the part since it was a poor design and a lot of people had the issue.
