So I am on my third set of phasers. I've had my car back from the dealer for 3 weeks and I'm getting the cold start rattle again?

Am I the only one?

Did the dealer provide the list of replacement parts? Perhaps they didn't replacement everything that needed replacing. What oil weight are you using?

Twice, the selling dealer service department for my 2015 Expedition Limited 4x4 (purchased new) installed 5W20 oil in the engine, instead of the required 5W30 oil. Once, they also installed 8 quarts of oil, instead of the required 6 quarts.

I no longer go to that dealer.

My point - the OP may hav a dealer or service provider that is not using the correct oil (or the OP may not be using the correct oil viscosity).

They replaced everything on the TSB. I had it done 20,000 miles ago as well and it came back. Seems like this is going to be an on going issue for the life of the vehicle.

No longer have the paperwork handy but they replaced everything they did the first time 20,000 miles ago.

I have to believe they didn’t use the updated parts the first time.
Keep us posted.

I don't have the paperwork because quite frankly if this keeps doing this I'll just go trade it in. The reason I waited for 30 days the first time was for updated parts that was Jan 2020. Phasers lasted about 7-8 months. First time I had everything they could think of replaced. This time they followed the TSB to a T. Seems like its just flawed design.

I don't know if it causes any issues but it sure is annoying.

I wonder if the Chevy Suburban/Tahoe crowd has their own laundry list of issues. Not a lot of reliable options in the 7-8 passenger truck space.

Mine is currently at the dealer for the 3rd time for the cold start rattle. Their response, "that's normal". I am so frustrated with Ford right now!

I had the cam phaser replacement over 20,000 miles ago. With the new parts.
No problems with the sound coming back. So no, I’d be telling my service manager it is NOT normal.

If it was normal how do they explain the fact that the large majority of Expeditions out there do not have that problem?

The dirty truth is that they have a quality control problem with the part, and they don’t want to have to keep swallowing the expensive repair bill.

Raise hell. The squeaky wheel...

It's not normal but from what I've read it most likely will continue to come back.

Similar un-fixable issues have resulted in massive class actions in recent years. I'm currently awaiting parts for the phaser replacement, and I can tell you that if it comes back, I'm likely not going to stick with Ford, it's my first one and I'm not paying more for a car than the house I was born in, and not getting a quality item.

Agreed. I'm trying to drop mine back off at ford later this week but honestly I might just drive it to another dealers and grab something else.

I like the new Tahoe/Suburbans but they seem to carry their own list of issues these days.

Definitely, and I absolutely wouldn't buy the first year of a Tahoe/Yukon. While they did some things right with their rear suspension, I'd wait at least a full model year for things to start cropping up. Some day the Toyota's of the world will start to build luxurious, well appointed, large SUV's with powerful/efficient motors, etc, and things will be different. Ford had a great run of quality, I just hope most of ours will show that, that's one of the reasons I felt comfortable buying this.

Well Land Cruiser would be ideal but honestly I bought this as a hauler/beater/family car. I use it for work mostly put about 20k a year on it.

The Toyota Seq. .. they need to change it up.

Agreed, have a friend with the LC and love it, great offroad, etc. But i don't like the 3rd row setup at all, needs to be a bit longer and wider with a true 3rd row.

Here's a question though, just thought about this. Being that this is the 3rd attempt at repairing this, when do you invoke the lemon laws?

So it rattles for a few seconds on cold start? Mine does something similar and its a 20' with 5500 miles....always has. Perhaps you guys are hearing something more than i am.....but i have to ask........other than the sound for little while, what is the issue?

There are known issues and TSB's that relate to the Phaser issues. In some cases it only gets worse over time. The real issue for many of us is that when you startup an $80K+ vehicle (MSRP, got it), and it sounds like something with a busted exhaust manifold etc, that's not okay. Even worse, is when you are side by side with an F150 or another Expy, and yours sounds like crap, and that one doesn't, something isn't okay. Finally, let's just say your buddy is sitting there next to you with a new Yukon and a traditional V8, you both start up and yours sounds like crap, not a good feeling.

But as a side note, there are known mechanical issues with this. Ford is months behind on parts availability and for example, my local dealer said a few weeks ago they were averaging one a week. That's nuts.

Luckily (knock on wood), I don't have any such issues with our 2018 Platinum, and we just crossed 40k miles.
My '19 Platinum started at 42k miles, my brothers 17 f150 started recently at 26k. the phaser design has supposedly been recently updated and are back ordered for quite some time. my service advisor claims that it cannot cause any damage, but im not taking that chance.
