Owned my 2000 Expy for 15 years and other than a torque convertor issue I had no problems. My brother in law owns it now and still no problems. Great vehicle. I changed the plugs myself with no issues at 100K. Now I own a 2009. Had it for a year, no issues (knock on wood). Did research and 2009 gets you away from plug and cam phaser issues. Love my Expy EL and would definitely do it again.

Steer clear of 2005 - 2008, those years have the 2 piece spark plug. Should be ok with a 2009 or newer

Get some SP509, Motorcraft brand.
They're NOT the old 2 piece style.

This. The plugs have been updated to a one piece design and maybe have been changed already. The design change from Ford took place mid 08, with brown COPs being indicative of the new one piece design. Just like the 2Vs that had horror stories of plugs blowing out because they only had a few threads newer plug designs remedied them. To the previous post about reliability I’m sure there are bad examples of them. I’ve generally had very good luck with FoMo products, owned lots of them and that’s why I keep coming back. Alternatively compared to similar vehicles from the same vintage Id definitely take the Ford. No make or model is without their issues and it’s a used vehicle with lots of miles. It’s always a gamble. Snd drive it again and see how it feels. Good luck, I hope you find the one you’re looking for!

Yeah, was gonna say...I'm not sure one can even GET the old two piece plugs anymore....unless there's a stash of NOW parts that someone didn't do an inventory update on....

And btw I think all 5.4L engines were troubled with timing issues, not just the earlier ones.

My 2007 XLT was very reliable In the 13 years I owned it. Had to get it towed only once due to a fuel pump failure. The 2 piece plugs lasted until I finally had Ford dealer replace them at 145k miles and was running fine until then, although I replaced the coil packs myself earlier. Rusted out rocker panels are likely an issue if the cars in the rust belt. Good idea to replace the teflon t-fitting for the coolant line on the passenger side with a brass fitting. Easy do it yourself upgrade to avoid a coolant leak on the road. My teflon fitting cracked twice over the years.

They've all gone 250,000+ miles without engine or transmission work. The railroad I worked for had a fleet of them which were pretty trouble free despite absurd abuse too. When I retires I took my 2000 with me and put another 150,000 miles on it.

Probably the wrong place to ask, but has anyone here had comparable experiences with Tahoes and Suburbans? How do they hold up?

Why wouldn’t he? Very few people are going to be looking for signs of an impending fuel pump failure. At the top of the list of things to leave a person stranded.

I know a few folks with the 07+ GM products. I like the looks and the seats are comfortable but the active fuel management issues in the 5.3, less towing, non fold flat seats, weaker transmissions and rear ends are issues. Every make has something. Some of them have well into the 200s though and are still going strong. I don’t think a person can go horribly wrong with either the third gen FoMo/GM products but like anything prior care is the key.
