My engine light came on, so I stopped by my local auto parts shop to have them check the code real quick (for free), and it came back as a catalytic converter issue. When I stopped by Ford to speak to them about it (showed them the photo I took from the code reader after they told me I would have to drop it off for at least a day for them just to check the engine light code and of course for a large fee), they then were kind enough to look it up in their computer system right then for me for free, and I was told that the catalytic converter on my Expedition (2010 XLT 4x4) was fully covered by Ford up to 80,000 and that the replacement of it would be free and that they had it in stock! He said the warranty would be saving me about $4,000! He emphasized that it had to be done before 80,000 miles for it to be fully covered. He said it was a pretty common issue with the Expeditions apparently (that is why Ford has the particular warranty) and that I was lucky it happened before 80,000 miles (I am at about 74,000 miles.) Not sure if this is for all Expeditions or just particular years, but just wanted to share this in case it happens to you and you arent aware (or the dealer isnt) that its fully covered to 80,000 miles. Just curious, anyone else have catalytic converter issues before 80,000 miles?

Just fyi - Before the engine light came on, I was smelling a strong odor whenever I started my Exp, like my muffler was blowing everything into my cab (even with the windows rolled up) and I also felt a big loss in power going up hill as well with towing for quite a while. My gas mileage also went to pretty good (for a 4x4 Expedition, lol) to dismal. It was almost cut in half. Come to find out all this is related to the catalytic converter.

Good post Dawgbyt,
Good catch and keep pushing Ford to get it fixed before you drive past 80k. From the symptoms it does sound like the converter is dead. Mine is starting down that path right now at 104k. Not an uncommon problem but that mileage does seem kind of low.
It would be nice if Ford could determine why it died so soon, otherwise you "might' have problems down the road.

Stop and go traffic on the way home from the mountain pass, my check engine light came on. (2018 Expy with 34k miles). I little bit later, my fordpass app binged and notified, "The engine control system has detected that the catalytic converters efficiency is below an acceptable level."
A few trips later the light went out. I presume this rouge warning and not to be concerned, but I'm still planning to take it in. I'll let you know what I find.

local Dealer Bill Pierre Ford checked out my Expy regarding the Check Engine Light and found no issues. Oh well, still running well, so no worries here.

Sounds about right. I used to work for a ford dealer. Anything emissions related (CAT, PCM EGR, ect..) gets a an 8 year 80,000 miles warranty.

tell them the light keeps coming on intermittently for them to swap it anyway so it doesnt happen to you later after 80k
