That sounds like a sorry warranty company. I would press for a new remanufactured (warranted) engine if you have that option. They're basically installing an engine of unknown history, that some junkyard swears was running when it was pulled. It's a feakin hand grenade and no better than the motor they're pulling out of your vehicle. I would dump the vehicle and the "warranty" and not deal with "Carvana" again.

I agree. I reached out to the warranty company today, and they have no info on the engine except that it’s around 66000 miles. No age, vehicle, history, anything. I’m going to try to press for answers Tuesday, see if it can be changed based on them being unable to prove it’s of “like kind and quality” as I can prove my good maintenance history and they cannot (think for a second they’d pay for a thing if I couldn’t come up with any records or history?). Depending on my options, and their stubbornness, I may see if I can put money towards a reman or even new one. Any further comments or suggestions from the hive mind are appreciated.

Read your warranty contract, and accept nothing less than exactly what is specified. But "Carvana" is an gimmick-driven predatory company well known for this nonsense. A junk yard engine is better than nothing, but hardly a reasonable solution. Perhaps you can shame a national company such as "Carvana" to do better?

Yeah I agree. You’re going to have to read it carefully. I’ve never heard of a warranty throwing in a used engine of unknown condition. That’s crazy as hell.

There isn't a shop within 100 miles of me that would put in a used junkyard engine/trans even if I signed a waiver releasing them of all liability, so it's hard to fathom a company doing this as a warranty repair. Ultimately though, your written warranty agreement is gospel, so see what it lets them do.

You still don’t have info on what cylinder has the rod knock? Anxious to know if there is a link with the coil failure on the same cylinder .

I'm with hamfisted on this one. These internet dealers are a licence to screw people. May be time to at least consult a lawyer

Small update. Haven’t been able to speak with a mechanic. I was able to strike a “deal” with the warranty company. Putting in a brand new engine, they’re paying the $3000 they say their engine costs (I’d love to see their invoice but they said it’s “internal information,” because when I look at LKQ’s 3.5L engines online, they’re all high $4000 or $5000 depending on mileage), I’m paying remaining $3000 for they new engine, they’re covering all the rest of labor and miscellaneous b.s. Don’t love it, but better than nothing.

NOW the service manager tells me that they’re on backorder, and he has NFC when they’ll be back. My engine, they say, has been escalated to the level above “emergency”, he called it COPAS or something like that.
Thankfully my mom let me borrow her extra vehicle, but it’s putting a major cramp in my summer plans not having the expy.
