Hi:

Does anyone have a recommendation of a transmission cooler for a 2018 Expedition/Navigator 4x4 without the tow package? I drive a Navigator but am not seeing anything for Navs specifically, so I’m asking for Expeditions too.

My local shop wasn’t a huge fan of some of the after market coolers, but Lincoln has told me there isn’t anything OEM.

I appreciate in advance any feedback or recommendations!

The 10R80 in the 18'-21' Expy uses a heat exchanger that used the radiator fluid to heat and cool the transmission. The F-150 Raptor has the heat exchanger and an external oil cooler with a thermostat. I have yet to find anyone that will confirm you can upgrade to the Raptor oil cooler. The Navi is supposed to have the Raptor motor but I don't have one to know if they have both coolers. The HD tow package includes a bigger radiator to help with the engine temp and transmission temps. In the past it would be the added cooler. Keep in mind the 10R80's normal operating range is 206F-215F for day to day driving. It actually uses the radiator fluid to heat the transmission fluid up to operating temps when cold. If you find anything let us know and if you have both coolers on the Navi let us know. Good luck.

How can I tell whether I have one or both coolers? Sorry for the very, very dumb question.

This is what the Expy has, the circled picture is the oil to water heat exchanger .

This is what the Raptor has. The oil cooler on the Raptor is on the drivers side in front of the radiator positioned in the middle and does not go all the way across. The aftermarket cooler take the cooler all the way to the passenger side of the radiator and they offer a thermostat delete option. Can a guy or gal buy all these parts and change over to this style? I bet you could, but I don't know anyone who has tried it. I thought about it, but my Expy tows all the time in some pretty hot weather and it's been fine.

I tow through the mountains & the stock towing temps up in the 240’s had my tranny slipping, & I don’t care what ford says, heat still kills transmissions, as I have seen plenty of these trannys torn up over at ford.
I ripped out the that heat exchanger located by the tranny, because the coldest the Trans fluid can cool off to is whatever the ECT is currently running at.

I built the tranny with McLeod frictions & steels & mounted a mishimoto traditional raptor cooler up front & run 150-175 flatland towing & very low 200 after pulling up serious hills at full towing speed

What all did you have to buy to get the new cooler installed?

No, it doesn’t have a front mounted cooler. It has an ECT-feed, heat exchanger down by the tranny, problem with that is that the tranny can never get cooler than the ECT, which IMHO is still way too hot, especially if towing, especially in up & down hills, like we encounter in the smokies.

I bought a mishimoto raptor cooler, ran lines up front, got rid of the Tran-mounted heat exchanger, and eliminated the ECT lines that were originally coming down from the motor to deleted heat exchanger.

Silver Bullet,

I can't get enough of what I'm seeing!

Looking to get rid of my heat exchanger in the worst way and go the radiator setup up front like this. I'm regularly running in the 210-220* range and this is waaay to hot! Your 150*-175* sounds gold. I was looking at the Mishimoto Raptor upgrade (is it PnP?) or go with a Hayden unit that I've used in the past (have built in tstat bypass). Can you detail more of what you did around the heat exchanger (pics?). Did you just disconnect the trans lines to the exchanger and attach the trans hose to them with clamps? What is the hose I.D.? 1/2"?

You say you removed the heat exchanger, what did you do to cap off the coolant lines, or did you just splice the return/feed lines?

Much appreciated!

Hilly,

10R80, PBH cooler adapter bracket at the bottom.

My Ford mechanic builds race cars, does all the 3.5 VCT’s, & mustang supercharger installs & enjoys doing custom work.

We towed today & ECT’s were 190-210 200-210 was really getting after through a steep hilly section & pulling fourth & fifth gear. Tranny ran 140-180 (around 150, flat towing around 70 mph (est. 8,000#).

How did we do it:

We just removed the ford trans hx & all the coolant lines to & from the engine to the faux trans cooler (hx).

Think about this:
the way ford has it set up, your trans can only get as cool as whatever your ECT is running ‍♂️

I went over to Parker-Hannifin-custom hose-shop & got 2 lines made & gave them to my mechanic.

I can only assume he somehow took care of the original coolant lines going back & forth to the faux cooler (hx)—(it’s in my basement or garage)

Almost forgot: running a mishimoto F150 radiator & just switch to a

REISCHE 170*, which made a very nice improvement this spring over the 180* I was running, last year (stock is 190*)

So I started off this weekend with getting the Mishimoto cooler installed as well as running the lines down to where I can run them back to the transmission. Since I’m removing the HX, I think an easy way to run the lines is to repurpose the coolant lines to the HX. Going to flush them out, ordered 5/8 lines to adapt to the coolant hard lines, and run them to tie into. I got overzealous with doing the cooler install and didn’t take pictures. I going to try to do this on my own if I have the patience and time. I figured at this point I can still take to a trans shop and have them do this without charging an arm and a leg.

If I do on my own, I’ll try to document for others to follow.

Where you able to get it to work?

Gotta say before I went through all that I'd be trying to locate a double deep trans pan for more fluid capacity. If that is viable.

There is a deeper aluminum trans pan out there. Someone posted about it somewhere in this forum.

Man if anyone has more details on that trans cooler, like part numbers for everything I would really like to do that! The engine oil cooler would be nice too.
