06 2WD clunk noted at slower speeds. My wife was driving me to work the other day and my window was down. At quite slow speeds, a clunking is heard.

Since mine is only a 2WD I thought I'd check in with y'all to ask for troubleshooting ideas. I work so many hours and have no garage at our new apartment, this is nothing I'm looking forward to doing myself...unless I do it at work. I'm a structural steel fabricator and iron worker. If need be, I'll do my repairs at the shop when I'm not working with the other crew.

I know I can do this. I just need more troubleshooting ideas before I start. Please and thank you.

More information may be helpful.

Accelerating - decelerating?

Braking, turning, stopping?

On smooth pavement - on rough roads, turning into a driveway with a curb, etc.?

It could be a defective universal joint, rear differential issues, a bad sway bar link, control arm bushings, etc.

Can you tell where the clunk is coming from? Front of car (failed wheel bearings, track rod ends, steering rack, etc), from the middle (gearbox, transmission universal joint, etc) or the rear (failed CV joint, differential issue, failing wheel bearings, etc). Could it be warped disks and the clunk is the warped disk just tapping the brake pad every time the wheel makes a full rotation? Knowing if the noise is coming from the front, middle or rear of the car, would help suggest things to check..

There's lots of good suggestions in this thread and all are possible. You're gonna have to narrow it down more. Like do you hear the noise when you change the throttle/speed, when you hit a bump, is it a rhythmic noise like every tire rotation or occasional, is it engine speed or tire speed.

You might also consider just consider getting under it and start grabbing and push/pull suspension. If it's an engine mount you might be able to get a better idea simply by raising the hood and blip the throttle to see if it the engine moves and then clunks, could be the rear trans mount too.

Lots of options for this one and sometimes it's not easy to figure it out.

All of the above. Getting more noticeable now...

Well, guys... my lower ball joints and driver side bearing are bad. Hoping to make it safely until the weekend with what's under there. A little spendy. But, I've done it all before on previous rigs. Thank you all for the troubleshooting information!
