Just bought a new (to me) 2001 Expedition XLT 50K miles. Has the 4.6

I bought it on Wed. from the dealer.

It broke down on Thurs. :(

Dealer got it fixed today said it was the #8 and #3 coil packs (had all the symptoms for it that I read about in here tonight)

Well I traded my 96' Jeep Cherokee in for this puppy. I love it, the size the looks.

But I am worried about this coil pack thing, seems to be just about the only thing not covered in my warranty and seems to be a problem in these from what I have heard and read.

Is it? Is there a way to prevent coil pack problems?

Are there any other issues I should know about?

Needless to say having it happen the day after I get it has got me spooked. I am wondering what else they might have missed?

This is a much bigger car payment than my Jeep was and I am now looking at 5 more years of payments instead of the 1 yr I had left on the Jeep.

I have a 2 month, 2000 mile warranty thru the dealer that covers everything then my 3 yr or 36000 mile one kicks in that doesn't cover the plugs or coil packs.

While it is under this 2 month one I am taking it to my trusted mechanic and asking him to check it over, anything specific I should tell him to look out for?

Thank you for any and all help!

Well all right I gues I can erase this address from my favorites, either it is a low traffic place or is just full of a bunch of people who don't feel like helping others so I will move on.

I hope all the folks driving Expeditions aren't like the folks that seem to be here.

AKTHOR,

I'm sure it's just a little slow here right now. As far as what else to look for, can you give us a little more info about the expy you bought. Is it a 4x4, does it have LLS (Load Leveling Suspension) in the front or back or both. I'm pretty sure the only real concerns were the coil pack issue.

Ok well sorry I didn't realize it was so slow here. Sorry for my above post ;)

It is a 4x4 XLT, ABS brakes, air, cruise, power drivers seat, power locks and windows, remote entry, code pad on drivers door, tow package, alloy wheels, 3rd seat, rear air, rear sound controls, roof rack. I think that's all?

The coil thing was a common problem on the 99's. I had a 99 and they put 3 in it before they recalled it and found that the radiator hose clamp needed to be replace because it would drip radiator fluid on the coils causing them to burn out. After 3 months and 3 coils my dealer figured it out.

Another problem I have seen with the 99-2001 is the rear wiper that quits working. Not sure what to do about that, heard it could be the motor or a relay.

Other than those 2 issues, the vehicles are great (for me) and I haven't heard about any other issues.......

Correct me if I'm wrong but I have several Fords in my family..... 3 expeditions, 2 F-150's, 2 Explorers, A 250, a ranger, and a Taurus. I know Ford well. There aren't coil packs in the Triton 4.6. There are 2 coils mounted on the front of the engine... one on the driver side and one on the passenger side. The only Ford engine with COP's is the 5.4. They are notorious for the engine coolant on the coil problem. I don't understand how you can have a coil pack go out because of a coolant leak. Please clarify.

I'm not a mechanic, just know what the dealership told me. There was a recall on it as well, maybe you can research the recall list for more info.....

Go to www.alldata.com and search for your truck. This is a good place to start by giving you a list of things to look for as well as any recalls that might need to get done. And yes this place is very slow. Stan

THe # 8 coil pack faiure is a common problem. There is a hose for the heater core right over the #8 coil that drips coolant onto the coil and causes failure. There is a TSB on this issue and they know about it. I believe that there is a kit that will fix this problem also. As for the #3 coil.... I think that it is a cooincidence that it failed also. I have 170,000 on mine and have never had to replace any of the coil packs.

Hi Akthor, my name is Tom, and we just bought an 01 expedition, when we test drove it, I noticed it had a slight hesitation and told the saleman about it. He assured me they would take care of the problem. I also noticed the truck felt like it swayed alot. When we got back to the lot, the front wheels were turned and I noticed the front sway bar bolts and bushing we missing. Anyways, they replaced them, and also the lower ball joints. We went to pick up the vehicle, and when I got in I noticed it was still stuttering and hesitating. I went right back in and had the service manager go for a ride with me. He told me they had replaced the throttle positioning senson. They have given us a rental vehicle while they are trying to fix this hesitation. From all things, it sounds like what you are describing with your vehicle. Did you get it fixed yet? Is the problem resolved? By the way, we just bought this after owning a 2000 ford explorer sport for 4 months, that we had nothing but problems with.

AKTHOR, This has been discussed in another Forum in great detail. THe name of the Forum Is Ford truck Enthusiast. Check it out.... they have alot of good people in there to help people out. I believe there is a kit available from Ford to fix the hoses. I personally don't have and haven't had the problem. Mine is a 97 and most of the problems are in 99+.
