At 11,000 miles of normal suburban Los Angeles driving, I had to have my front rotors replaced. The dealer said they were "cupped," and beyond machining. A co-worker with 3,000mi had to have one front rotor replaced.

Anybody else needing premature rotor replacement on their new Expys?

I have a 2000 Expy 4x2 .We LOVE it and have had no problems whatsoever except.... Well we bought it brand new the summer of 2000 and since then we have replaced our front rotors twice and rear rotors twice along with all the brake pads an equal number of times.. Most recently the rear rotors being replaced again just a month ago. Along with the brake pads. Our front brakes are makeing strange noises again and we are getting ready for a new pair of pads this summer. Hopefully rotors are good since they were just changed summer of 02'. I guess this was a common problem with the late model expeditions because a freind of mine also had the same issues on his 99'. He luckily had his existing warranty and the dealer replaced them without fuss. As for me our warranty ran out after only a year because of excessive traveling. Anyway , If the new Expys also have this problem I may have to rethink getting another at the end of my current lease . I really hope ford fixes this problem soon.

I have a 03' Expedition. I bought it July 02'. It has about 28,000 miles ( trips to Texas, plus I work 50 miles away). I've taken it every time for the scheduled maintenance and have taken good care of it. But NOW I need my rotors replaced. The front two rotors are scratched into beyond normal with the brake pad still half way, they can still be fixed $$$. My rear rotors are completely messed up. The pads wore out faster then the fronts and the rotors are messed up beyond repair. So I need to replace the rotors and get new paddles for the rear. I noticed the problem early on because of the large about of brake dusk in the front rims. I took the car to the dealer because the wear didn’t seem normal to me. But they just told me the disk getting scratched is normal. I told tell yes but that the scratching was too much and the pad we still ¾. They said that it was because of the mileage and nothing was covered. So I took it to another Ford Dealer where they checked the brakes for any defects and they charged me for it. They ended up telling me that the wear was normal for Expeditions with that mileage. Now I need to get everything repaired which is $500+ because only Ford dealers sell the pads and the rotors.

So is this normal for all you people will 03’ Expeditions? Why are Ford brake parts so weak? I have friends with Tahoes and Suburbans and there pads don’t damage the disc so much and the rotors don’t need to be replaced so soon.

I have questions.. :) do you guys have AdvanceTrac? Having lived in LA and the suburbs, I know that there is a lot of stop-and-go driving....

The BIG question is did you have to pay for these repairs?

Re reading here...you had to pay??? I think that is very wrong. There is probably not much you can do about it, but I would certainly write a letter of complaint or two.

I didn't have any problems at all with my 2000 EB, but I did only have about 22k miles on it before turning it into a 2003 EB. So far (only 1300 miles), the only problem (brake wise) is the dust. Pulled our tent trailer for the 1st time with the 2003, and it seemed to brake a little better (smoother) than my 2000 did.

Brake Dust

I just bought an '03. I was shocked at the amount of brake dust on the wheels after 100 miles of driving. I stopped by the dealer and asked.
They said that the Expedition is known for this.
I just sold my '01 F150. I had to replace the rotors and pads at about 36K, but I had no where NEAR the amount of brake dust as this.
Ford says that pads and rotors are covered for the first 12 months, 12K miles. My response to them was, bumper to bumper doesn't really mean bumper to bumper?
Dealer says that wear/tear items are treated differently.
New rotors (aftermarket) aren't that expensive, I think I paid less than $100 apiece for my F150 rotors. I'd bet that they're the same rotors as the Expedition. Changing them was not hard either. I did pads and rotors in my garage, took about an hour.

My '99 Expy did make a lot of brake dust, but the new '03 seems to be about twice the amount....I hope my rotors don't warp/wear out like this!!!

Dirty rims--do you spray the wheels while they are hot? I was thinking about the warping of the rotors and happened to recall that when we went to the Expedition orientation at the dealer shortly after purchase, it was mentioned about the dust and to NOT get out the hose and spray the wheels--warping will result.

I don't use car washes but could it be that the car wash could cause rotor warping? When you drive in off the street and immediately go through the spray, it would be something like hosing off the rims.
