Was driving home from Texas Roadhouse tonight and got a check engine light. Thought it was just the p0420 code that I have had since i bought her. The previous owners told me they replaced all the o2 sensors so it is most likely a bad cat. Turns out that this code was a p2270 instead. Anyone have experience with that code and willing to share some wisdom? I'm hoping it's something simple like a bad o2 sensor

@GngrBeardMan, the code does say it’s a bad O2 sensor, but it may not be the O2 sensor directly. Before buying and replacing the O2 sensor, check the various vacuum lines, your fuel rail Schrader valve, fuel pulse dampener on the rail, make sure the fuel rail is snug and secure, and all other various hoses. Your air fuel ratios being off can trick the O2 sensor into thinking you are running lean when you are not, and it may not flag in the ECU as a different code.

So you had two codes for bank 1 sensor 2, P0420 and P2270. How did you know you had a new code if P0420 is always there? If you clear them how long until the light comes back on? Is your exhaust how it came from the factory? Does it have two cats on each side?

I'll check this when I swap in a new belt this weekend. Thanks for the tips.

So it's been throwing the P0420 since I got it. The check engine light will come on after around 100 miles of driving. I've cleared it after trying a couple of things that some people told me were would potentially fix it and it always came back after about a hundred miles give or take 20 on either side. The p2270 however popped up recently and I haven't seen that one since I bought the rig, I think it's been 3 years now. The exhaust is the same exhaust from the factory. The people who owned it before me said they had replaced the O2 sensors on both sides and that code kept popping up so they assumed it was just a bad cat and I was originally planning on just deleting the cat and throwing in a piece of exhaust pipe in its place instead but I've heard from a few people that with this particular generation you can get gas smells and whatnot plus if I'm going to remove the cat on one side I should probably remove it on the other side so that increases the cost and then if I don't want the check engine light to always be on I'll have to try to get it programmed which I don't even know how much that would cost LOL. I've been kind of just driving it with the check engine light on or every once in awhile I'll clear it with my FIXD that I have installed in it right now

I installed a set of O2 sensor spacers in my 03 Navigator. It came with gutted cats when I bought it last year. The spacers created a delaying action and the PCM fell for it= no more P0420 code. I did not like the engine noise on my four cam engine with four empty cats, it sounded like it had a cheap set of headers on it. Very tinny noise. I installed a set of 2006 cats off my wrecked Navigator and removed the spacers. The rig makes zero engine noises now which is appropriate for a nice Navigator. No check engine lights so I am happy.
