Recently after a long trip, my 99 Expedition (75,000 miles)developed a tick, which sounded as if it were low on oil (it was not low). After several days of driving, I started it and it sounded as if it were backfiring repeatedly. My mechanic tells me the number 5 spark plug had exploded and damaged the header which will now need to be replaced at around $4000.00. He says I could put a rebuilt engine in at around $6000.00. I still owe around $11,000.00 on the vehicle. Has anyone heard of anything like this happening before? Any suggestions on how to proceed?

waysa1, I would say he needs to provide MUCH more information. Plugs don't explode. They will crack, peices will fall off of them and when they do, they will usually damage the cylinder head. In most cases, if the cylinder itself has not been damaged, you can replace the head. I would get some VERY clear definition or tow it to a Ford dealer for better diagnosis.

You could buy a 100 mile 2003 motor on ebay for 3 grand. That guy sounds like he thinks you are a *******. A head replacement could be done for less than 2500 on that car, worst case scenario. You could probably get out for 1500 or so.
