Just saw this on our local news tonight. Ford has issued a HUGE safety recall on all '97 through '02 Expeditions for a potential problem with the speed control deactivation switch. The short version is, an engine fire can occur if the situation is not rectified. Seems the switch can become corroded if it comes in contact with brake fluid. Since the switch is in close proximity to the brake fluid res, this is a real problem. Ford says that most of the time the switch simply corrodes and blows a fuse. But if the fuse does not blow...fire. Here's a link to the Ford website. Seems that my wife had to really search for this page...Ford isn't really wanting to advertise this in big bold letters.

Originally, Ford was not recalling all of the vehicles that might be effected. There was an earlier post in this forum referencing this. Now Ford IS recalling the trucks, like our Expeditions. It even goes back to '94 Broncos. It also effects '94 through '02 F150s and '98 through '02 Navigators. Ford says that due to the massive number of vehicles effected, the repair part may not be available in large quantities. The recommend that you call/visit your dealer and if they don't have the part available, they'll disconnect the switch until they get the part. I already disconnected mine, just in case. Good luck, everybody!

I took my 99 in last week. I was at the dealer for about an hour. 55 minutes to wait, 5 minutes for the tech to fix problem.

It's free! I had mine changed a couple of months ago. I just drove in and they took care of it, even though I had just bought it from a friend and had no paperwork for the recall. All they need is the VIN. It only took about 15 minutes wait for me too. You don't have to pull a fuse if you don't want to go in, just unplug the sensor and no fire. I just couldn't deal with not having the cruise control so I went in just after I got mine.

Locally, no dealers have gotten the repair parts yet. They're not expected until next month. I disconnected the switch myself, that's all the dealer is doing until the parts arrive, anyway. Driving w/o cruise available is a PITA! I suppose I could connect it if I go on a road trip, then disconnect it at my destination...PITA again! :p

I guess I'll have to pull the plug on my CC. We just took a trip to Va and I am not sure I could have driven that with out it.

Ford just sent me a card saying no parts until FEB 2006...
