Imagine you are driving your Expedition in the same conditions (fuel, load, temperature, wind, direction, etc.) on the same straight flat road for the same distance. If you drive at 55, 65 and 70 will you see a difference in mpg if you compare normal, eco and sport modes?

At a constant speed? Probably not.

Your different modes are going to change your shift points (in sport I can be going 60 in 3rd, but I could easily be in 7th if I’m in eco). Sport will also downshift you more aggressively, for instance. So the difference will be seen on acceleration and deceleration, not cruising.

But not necessarily, as often in sport if I’m cruising at 70 it’ll keep me in 8th or 9th to give me extra legs if I decide I need to accelerate.

So my answer is still “probably not at a constant speed”...but maybe.

Yes, I meant constant speed. My mechanically challenged mind tells me the mpg will be the same

It will be the same except certain modes might up RPM speed by using lower gears. Eco goes tallest gear possible always

sports mode and Trailer mode holds lower gears and is also more aggressive on down shifting. I noticed eco doesn’t down shift going down hill, but normal, sport and trailer does.

So eco will run 10th at 60+ where as sport might run 8th etc

On the highway at 55, in SPORT mine will stay in 7th or 8th gear and it sucks fuel like crazy (18ish). Normal mode at 55 puts it in 10th gear as well as eco and the mpg is great (24ish).

Sport holds the lower gears much longer, so once you get over 67mph, mine will slide into 10th gear. At 65-66mph, it will stay in 9th all day long. Great for sporty driving, but horrible for MPG.

Towing mode does the same, stays in the lower gears for longer.

10th gear on the highway will get your best mpg, so staying in 9 or 8 will just reduce MPG.
