Could be the lift glass. When we first got ours we had the same issue at first. The lift gate button is at the bottom handle and the lift glass button is midway under the black handle of the glass. If it's not closed, you will get that notification

If the liftgate and hatch are both "closed" but you're still getting the error message, you might have the same issue I did. I would have to push the striker area on the hatch into the vehicle while the hatch was almost closed in order not to get the dashboard warning. Its apparently a sensitive switch.

Mine was a problem when new so if this is something new for you then perhaps the latch bolts have slipped and need to be adjusted and tightened.

In my case, the dealer tried that and it only worked for a few days. I solved it by simply turning the rubber bushings clockwise at the bottom of the hatch by half a turn at a time, so they're not pushing the hatch outward as much (to prevent rattling). You might want to try that if yours has done this occasionally since new. If it's a new issue on an older vehicle, could be the latch needs adjustment or your hatch closed limit switch is bad.

Just saw your odometer so I assume it's a new issue for you. I would still try turning the two rubber stops clockwise into the hatch evenly to see if that helps.

If not, then like I said previously, you might need to adjust the striker or replace a faulty switch.

Yes the gat lifts. The handle is at the bottom near the bumper. There is a button you push and it will lift.

I would open the glass and find the button that is used to detect it is closed. Press it and see if the warning goes away. If it does then do the same with the entire gate. If it goes away with both buttons then you need to adjust the glass or door. If not then try and figure out which one is bad. if adjusting don't work come back here and let us know. Remember small adjustments at a time.

She said the lift gate worked perfectly this morning. I am not with her. I did get her to clean around the lift gate where the sensors are yesterday afternoon.

About the glass, we didn’t know that it opens separately. How do we open it?

Crouch down and look up into the lights for your rear license plate. There should be two rubber buttons, one on the left and one on the right of the lights. One button is to release the glass only (I think it's the left button), and the other is to release the hatch.

My Navigator has hieroglyphics printed on the taillight bar depicting what each button does. Perhaps the Expeditions do too.

Button for the window is above license plate, just below Expedition chrome piece. Button for hatch is located down near the handle.
