My adult daughter's '15 XLT started going into limp mode a few days ago. She says when she or the kids are driving and it goes into limp mode, if they shut if off and restart it, it will do ok. Sometimes for long periods, occasionally in short order. I scanned it last night and the only code showing was P0420 which said something about the catalyst percentage on circuit 2. I cleared the code and told my daughter it may be a clogged catalytic converter problem, but not sure. After I cleared the code, it hasn't come back on but the truck has gone into limp mode a couple of times between last night and this morning. When I talked to my diesel mechanic just now, he said he doesn't think it's the cats, and that it might be a timing problem. He said if it were the converters it wouldn't clear the limp mode by just shutting if off and restarting. So now I'm scratching my head and don't know which direction to go.
I will add that this is her and my 3 teenage kids only form of transportation right now, and she's a single mom/working nurse and one grandson works. I'm presently working on his car after he ran off the road, and the Grand Prix the other two kids use is getting the transmission rebuilt, so they're all depending on the Expedition for everything, so this is urgent. Any ideas, comments or experience with this type of problem would sure help me decide on what the next step should be. Thanks in advance for any help. Lee

Have you checked the battery terminal connectors and battery posts to ensure they are clean and tight? Are you SURE the battery is in good condition?

If was common for the positive battery terminal and connector to corrode due to battery fume leakage and the red vinyl cover over the post.

I bought a new 2015 Expedition Limited 4x4 and had the problem. After my dealer’s “multi-point” inspection one visit, I found the corrosion when I checked under the cover.

If I were here, you would know it !
I don't know about the Expy's, but on some of my other vehicles (09 Impala & 011 Acadia) the limp mode was engaging due to bad ABS sensors & wheel bearings....

Replacing the bad parts resolved the issue for good....

I can't offer any help, but my 2017 has done the same thing twice over the last 8-9 months. Both times we were accelerating (not sure if that makes any difference). First time was driving up a hill about half mile from my house. Half way up went into limp with wrench on dash. Steered it over to the shoulder and shut it off. Re-started and no light or issues. That was the first time, so I took it to the ford dealer. They said no codes and had no ideas.

Second time was merging from a ramp onto the Ohio Turnpike. I was hauling a trailer this time. Went into limp with wrench on dash again. I was fortunate enough to be able to guide it to the shoulder again without getting into an accident. Shut it off and then re-started after a minute. No lights on dash, etc...

I have 4 kids all under 10 and this is the vehicle that fits us when we are all together. So its definitely something I don't feel great about, but dealer doesn't have any ideas and I can't just leave it there for them to try different things, since we won't all fit in my truck.

I will be following along. Good luck showme !

This is an easy one for both the 15 and 17. Those were built with faulty throttle position sensors. They have to be calibrated after the new one is installed. There is a TSB for that. What's my prize?

It's likely the throttle body. The sensor in the throttle body gets sketchy and starts giving erroneous readings, or the drive mechanism gets sticky. It's a design issue, I've replaced the stupid thing on my '17 twice. Fortunately they're pretty inexpensive and about a 45 minute job from hood-open to done - it's only 4 bolts, a plug or two, and the clamp to hold the intake pipe on. Easier than changing the oil on these things anyway.

The symptoms you and timbits588 describe are exactly what mine would do. Every once in a while it would go into limp mode on acceleration, sometimes with weeks between incidents. Wrench icon, no codes. But it can be very dangerous if it decides to do it during a left turn across traffic, so fix it sooner than later.

Fortunately the parts are cheap enough that I'm at the point of just keeping a spare around. Happy wife, happy life, etc. https://www.fordpartsgiant.com/parts/ford-throttle-body-and-motor-asy_bl3z-9e926-b.html

If she is heavy on the gas I would replace the spark plugs. I had similar issue limp mode on hard acceleration getting onto the highway the issue cleared up but no saved codes.

Had a similar issue during a long trip to the southeast in our '17. Newer plugs, coils and everything else was well within spec.

Throttle Body was the eventual culprit.
