If it were me (and it isn't), I'd keep the 5,000 mile oil change frequency. Why fool with success, especially as the truck gets older? The oil carries away impurities in the engine and the only way to get them out is to change the oil and filter. Oh well thats my 2 cents.:D
synth oils
I think that's a little BS about not using synth in engines not designed for them and creating leaks. I have changed over:
1) an Expedition at 75K mikes - now at 125K
2) a Jaguar at 30K miles - now at 50K
3) a Mustang at 20K miles - now at 45K
4) a Sebring Convert at 80K miles...
I've been told that the "Pump Inlet Flush" equipment is much better than the mostly used equipment that hooks up the the fluid lines going to the radiator. Can anyone shed light on this subject?

I have a '97 Expy 4X4 with just over 115,000 miles. I guess it's time to change the Ball Joints.
Has anyone done it before and can you give me some advice. I think the uppers will be easy to change because I think they come with the arms and it's just an unbolt / rebolt deal.

synth oil change frequency
I use full synthetic oil, buy Mobil 1 at Walmart for $18.00 / 5 quarts, and Mobil 1 oil filters. I change at 3 - 4 thousand mile intervals. Because the oil is used to carry away the engine borne contaminates I can't see what good leaving the oil for longer intervals...
