Switching to Synthetic Oil??

After 100,000 miles you can DEFINITELY see adifference from Dino to synthetic. The internals on the synthetic engine look like the day it came out of the factory. (clean) Dino motors turn brown from deposits. I worked with the machine shop on a couple of rebuilds...boy what a difference. The machinist even showed me the cross hatch in the cylinder bore from the synthetic motor. The Dino motor was smooth. Wear of the bearings was only a slight difference.

and its better how? because you can see the cross hatch? or because the motor is cleaner. let me know if it is still running after 300,000 miles .

How about a million?

While I am not endorsing Amsoil, I have heard/read the claims. A cleaner engine will outlast an engine that has deposits. It is a fact that Dino leaves a varnish deposit (brown discoloration) after time.

Synthetic Oil

I have over 220,000 miles on my 97 Expi and it still runs strong. Only use Mobil 1 since day one and have synthetic fluid in the tranny, still looks good. I called Mobil and they told me that I can go up tp 7500 miles before an oil change. I normally do it @ around 5000. I'll start changing it @ around 7500 from now on.:cheers:

If it were me (and it isn't), I'd keep the 5,000 mile oil change frequency. Why fool with success, especially as the truck gets older? The oil carries away impurities in the engine and the only way to get them out is to change the oil and filter. Oh well thats my 2 cents.:D

I've used Mobile 1 since 6K miles. I just switched from 5W-30 to 10W-30 based on recommendations that as the mileage gets higher it okay to switch to a bit heavier oil. I have always used Motorcraft oil filters. The engine has 95K+ miles on it now. I've had zero engine problems. I use a K&N air filter.

The manual on my 05 Expy says use 5w-20 semi synthetic. I don't see any reason why you can't use a full synthetic. Should only be better.

I have 240k on my Ex. Long time I used regular oil and after
220K I decided to use synthetic. Recently I found an oil leak from
head gasket. Switching to synthetic oil probably causes this problem.
Should I switch back to regular oil or continue to use synthetic?

How long should you wait to switch to synthetic on a new motor? I just picked up a 2006 Expy Ltd (5.4l) and fully plan to use Mobil 1, but how long should I wait 'till I do that?

Also, I've heard you should change the oil for the first time around the 1,000mi mark. Any thoughts?

I think it's a good idea to change the oil at 1,000 miles during break in. I think the owners manual also states this. The important thing is to flush out any debris from the manufacturing and break in process.

I personally would use the Ford semi-synth. oil up to the 5,000 mile mark or maybe 10,000 to ensure good ring seating. I chose 10,000 just to be safe.

As posted above, I started with the Mobil 1 0-20w full synth as that's all they offered then. I've since switched to the Mobil 1 5-20w since they now offer the correct weight. I continue to use the Motorcraft oil filter. I have not experienced any leaks or other problems. The vehicle now has 36,000 miles on it.

I had the trans flushed at the dealer at 30,000 miles and wished I could have had a full synthetic oil used. The Ford fluid (Mercon V) is semi-synthetic and apparently that's all there is for now, unless somebody has found otherwise.

Having just bought a 97 with 105,*** of course one of the first things to do is to change the oils, should I use dino, or syn. Coming off a dealership who bought it from a wholesaler, I don't think there is anyway to tell what it is running currently.

Sure there is. When you drain it, you can tell. Stick your little finger up into the hole and feel around. If you feel some sludge, it was conventional. If its smooth, it was synthetic.

I own a pennzoil oil change center. I am in GA, so it wouldn't benefit me to sell you something, as chances are you'll never buy from me anyway. (although, stranger things have happened)

Here is the real lowdown on the difference.

Conventional oil begins to break down after it get hot and beaten. You see those thermal viscosity commercials that Castrol used to do. They were full of crap. You never could read the fine print, but when recorded and read, they were comparing their best synthetic to a leading conventional. Con artist and nothing more. As the conventional oil breaks down, it turns to a tar looking substance, and develops a "sludge" for lack of better terms. That tar like substance hardens on the outside, which will cause blockages in oil passageways. (kinda like cholestoral in arteries) Sooner or later, if abused enough, it will finally completely clog and the engine will starve itself of oil at one major point or another, leading to failure.

Synthetic Oil doesn't break down. What happens to synthetic is that the additives that make it work wear out. Over time, it looses lubricity (yes that is a word) In essence, instead of functioning like oil, it begins to function like a simple lubricant. When the synthetic breaks down far enough, it will become like watery crap and again, failure will be likely.

Don't ever believe in marketing. Marketing is simply a tool, and fools believe everything they see and hear. Lots of people ask me, why should I change my oil at 3000 miles when the dealer says 7500. Would you go to the dentist for a broken arm? Auto manufacturers make cars, not oil. When an oil manufacturer says do it at 3000 miles, it best to follow their advice. And in most vehicle maintenece guides, it says for severe service change every 3-5 thousand miles. Severe service is defined as
stop and go driving, long haul high speed, dusty condition, extreme hot or cold, and so on. Amsoil is the biggest joke on earth, and unfortunately Mobil has decided to follow suit with their 15000 mile oil. I have done this for 10 years, and I don't believe it for a second. Do you think Mobil is going to pay you for a blown engine? Not likely, about 1 in a million.

For your expedition, I would run a 10/30 synthetic, or synthetic blend oil. THere is also a high mileage oil that will benefit you, as your expy will probably burn some oil. That oil will reduce the amount burned. I have 89000 on my navigator 5.4 and I run full synthetic 10/30 and it still burns 2 quarts in 3000 miles.

If you want to get further into that, just let me know. I have quite the wealth of oil knowledge, but it can get boring
