So I have a strange intermittent sound that only recently occurred under specific conditions.
1. Around 70+mph
2. After driving at those highway speeds for at least 30 minutes.
3. Sound "sounds" like wind noise but its more like a metallic bearing sound on a pulley. Or maybe a rotating...
I just recently got my 2010 expedition ... talked to the previous owner (left docs in glove box) and he said the auto running boards died a slow death till he just put them up and left them up.
After reading here I lowered them and cleaned them up kept working in the WD40 and finally they ruan...
Update.
I know some people said my engine sounded fine ... but I found a video on youtube from FordTechMacuLoco and on the the passenger side ticking sound. It sure sounded like my engine.
So I have a GREAT mechanic (Plug: Starky Auto, Omaha) Who for a couple hundred buck took off the...
So was getting a P0150 code over and over and took it in and they performed the Ford recommended reprogramming of the PCM as there was some service advisory about this. The O2 Sensor (pre-cat) seemed to be running fine so led them to the PCM service. (TSB 13-3-5)
That seemed to work but then...
I've read a lot about the 5W30 Europe versus US makes sense to me I think I'll do it right away seeing who knows how long it's been since this had an oil change before I did it
I think the ticking sound is stronger now that I've changed the oil. (used 5w-20, some say 5w-30 is way to go???) after I got it the a/c compressor clutch was shot so I replaced it first... then the dip stick was stuck and read that many people say the engine has to be hot ... still stuck but...
So I just went out and recorded the cold engine idle and how it sounds ... this might make it easier for someone experienced to hear it instead of me trying to figure it out.
Yes it seems its the whole tilt assbly. I had my daughter move it while looking at the u joint shaft under the hood ... did not see the u joint shaft parts moving.
What are normal 5.4 3V sounds?
So 2010 Ford Expedition (doy that why posting in this forum)
187K miles and the oil definitely was not changed every 3 to 5k ... more like 10K ish from what I can tell.
I've been researching this and seems lots of potential problems around phasors, timing chain...
OK I finally figured out the sound. The steering wheel has some vertical play in it. Sitting still I can move the steering wheel up and down (toward the roof toward the floor to be perfectly clear) it only move like a 1/16" and make the slight tick sound.
it does not do it turning the wheel...
I remembered to test this sitting still and its firm no tick or click. I only notice the slight tick or click in the steering wheel every once in a while while driving and turning the wheel.
Is this the correct part?

I just got the expedition 187K miles and dont know the maint history. I have noticed that slight click or gap in the steering at times. I'll try it sitting still.
Is this the part you fixed?

Thanks, So just because the hub is engaged does not really do anything other than more mechanical wear vs not being engaged? Its not like I'm going arouind with 3 wheel drive, it only goes to 4 wheel drive once the transfer case is engaged?
This 4wd hub vacuum line is broke right in the front of the vehicle. #2 pretty much right where the #2 label is. This feeds? vacuum to the passenger 4wd hub.
Do the hubs engage WITH vacuum or WithOUT vacuum.
With this line broke is my hub on the passenger side on all the time????
Anyone...
