07 Expy EL - Replaced Idler Pulley, Replace Serpentine belt and belt tensioner - I still have noise

Hey all,

Had a sort of whining, squealy noise, did some research and most pointed to the idler pulley - so I replaced the pulley, belt and belt tensioner. Now the noise is not as bad but it's still there. I'm thinking the other pulley/wheels need replacing but I can't work out what they are to order new ones?

I'm thinking the big one on the left is the AC pulley and the smaller one on the right is the power steering?

Alternator? Take the belt off and spin each one individually to see if you hear any noise of feel any roughness when you turn the pulleys.

When I try to find the squeaky wheel, I'll start the engine and spray WD 40 on each pulley one at a time, trying to hit the axle/bearing. When the squeak stops....bingo.

ps: That can be quite messy, with the fan blowing the fluid around the engine well.

Use a long socket extension and hold one end to where you think the noise is and the other to your ear. Make sure you do not come in contact with any moving parts. You should be able to find where the noise is coming from.

I had a Dayton(avoid this brand) serpentine belt, make a squeak/chirp. It was worse on rainy or damp days. I switched to a Goodyear/Continental Gatorback. It says on package "the quiet belt" and it fixed problem. The alternator or tensioner, is usually more a whine. Check your power steering fluid level. If it is low, it will make noise. Check your pulleys for dirt/rubber build up. Don't spray anything, but water on a serpentine belt, it will ruin them.

So after a lot of listening and searching I could not find the source of the whine. So I took it into an auto shop and asked them to take a look. Their estimate is the timing chain.

did you try running it without the belt? If the noise gone then it has to have something to do with the belt/drive

Sounds like a bunch of BS, these timing chains don't whine...or squeal.Take it somewhere else... the noise you describe most likely has nothing to do with it and sounds like your dealing with cash grabbers not mechanics.

I am resurecting this thread so as to point out my stupidity. I had always assumed I did a Power streering flush when I first got the truck but apparently I just never got round to it (this is why people use check lists). So I had a friend take a look and listen to the noise. He opened the power steering resovoir and said “your power steering fluid smells and looks like burnt shit” and the noise is the power steering pump.

Did a flush right away (as I already had all the stuff needed) and it was considerably better but still noisy. So i have ordered a new pump.

It’s not the timing chain. Also I had booked it into that auto shop to recharge the ac system. They charged me $168 and did nothing.

It happens to all of us a some time.

$168 doesn't sound bad for an evacuation and recharge. What were you expecting them to do? If they didn't find anything wrong, there's not much else to do. What were you expecting them to do?

Not many car owners "flush" power steering. I personally, never have, but refilled it when line was replaced. Yours should have Mercon V transmission fluid.
