I'm totally new to these 3rd gen expeditions so I don't know if this is normal with these model years or if there's something not right with the steering components on this truck. I owned a 00 Eddie Bauer previously to this newer model and I can tell you that turning the steering wheel on the old expy was something that I could've easily done with just a finger or two. Sadly some ******* totaled my 00 expy so I bought a 07 expy that at the time the small dealer I bought it from told me upfront that the steering rack needs to be replaced which they did when I bought it. I took the new eddie home and in a matter of hours I noticed that the wheel started to feel harder to turn so I called the dealer and they told me to bring it in to replace the ps pump.

Two days later we got the truck back and everything seems fine up until my wife who is the primary driver started complaining to me that the wheel feels a little hard when making a turn. Now, she's still sore from the accident but I drove the truck and the wheel doesn't feel that hard to me but it definitely feels a little harder to turn and sometimes I find myself using both hands to turn the wheel instead of just using my palm. I'm not sure if this is normal and I want to say it does still feel the same as it did when they replaced the ps pump. I've never driven any other 2 or 3 gen expeditions so I really don't know if I should bring it back to the dealer or go to a ford dealer and have a tech look at it. Does anyone know if there's a steering difference in a 1st gen and a 3rd gen Eddie Bauer expy?

I too went from the 1st gen to a 3rd gen Expy. The steering feels firmer to me too. I like it as it reminds me how big the EL really is.

Rack and pinion steering vs recirculating ball.

They went to variable power assist rack and pinion steering in the 2nd generation expys.

Rack and pinion is more precise with much more road feel. IMO if they add too much assist it loses some of its feed back and "road feel". Recirculating ball steering systems have very little feedback to begin with and traditionally have more power assist.

What your feeling could be the difference in design between the systems or maybe there is an issue with the variable power assist?!
