We have a 1998 Expedition. went to start it this morning and it just turns over. I shot some starter fluid in the intake and it started right up. Checked the Fuel Pump Relay Fuse and it's OK. Listened for the pump running in the tank and didn't hear anything. Is there a way I can confirm it's the pump without replacing it? Is there something Im not diagnosing correctly? Thank you

How many miles on the expy? Was the pump ever changed in the past??

Take a rubber mallet and have someone try to start the engine and at the same time give the tank a good whack with the mallet if it starts I would suspect a bad pump

1) theft light should not be blinking fast
2) check the fuse according to the sticky in the electrical section on the forum
3) if the fuse has power check for power on pins 30 and 86 of fuel pressure relay
4) if those check out you can test for power at the inertia switch or fuel pump
4) if the above steps check out then take fuel pressure readings at ign run
5) or just roll the dice and put a pump in then check all of the above if the pump hasn't been changed

Kurt did you get it fixed?

I have a similar problem with my 02. Crank but will not start. It started with gas sprayed into intake, my pump was silent, I tried a different key, fuse is good, relay is good, inertia switch is working, swapped out the whole fuel pump assembly along with new hoses and did NOT fix the problem. At this point I am wondering if the computer is bad. Any ideas?

GandT, did you swap with a new pump assy or picked up one from the junkyard?
How did you test the fuse and relay?
Have you tried jumping the relay?

Don't wonder if something has failed, prove it has failed.
The pcm will cycle power to the fuel pump for a few seconds during the cranking cycle. It needs to have input from the sensors that the engine is running or it cuts power to the pump.

Stamp, I bought a new fuel pump assembly. I tested the fuse with a multimeter and I tested the relay a couple ways. I touched it while someone turned the key over and I also swapped it out with a known good relay. I also tested the camshaft sensor with a magnet. The only sensor that is remaining that I have not physically tested is the crankshaft sensor.

However, I keep going back to the fact that the pump never makes a sound when the key is switched on. My check engine light goes out too when I am cranking the motor which I believe, tells me that the crankshaft sensor is good. Not 100% on that though.

This one is kicking my butt.

Check for power on the fuel pump relay on pins 86 and 30 when first cranking. Pin 30 may be hot at all times. You should see 12v on both.
If you have access to a fuel pressure gauge it may be needed in the near future to verify the correct pressure.

Update: Stamp, thanks for the advice. I tried the remote start yesterday and it works but using the key does not work so I am thinking I have narrowed this down to the theft/ignition area. I need to do some more troubleshooting today after work. Thanks for the help. I'll be sure to put the solution on once I find it.
