Hi there guys and gals! I am from San Fran Bay but moved to Florida a few years ago. My mother just moved here and is having problems with her 2002 Expedition. It has 19000 confirmed miles and was bought new. After about 30 miles it sputters and the cats pop and it dies. It will restart and rev high but wont idle and dies again. We have had it checked at the dealer and they want a fortune (about what it's worth) to fix it. It has a 5.4. the dealer said it was the #1 coil and boots and needed plugs and the pcv hose was collapsing. We did the coil and a fuel filter and pcv and pulled the pcv line to check it and it's fine. I checked the EGR and if I apply vacuum to it while its running it mimicks the issue perfectly. Any help here would get my uncle to his doctor appts. Thank in advance. Oh and she wants to give this Truck to me and move back to Cali. So I am looking forward to being a happy Ford owner someday soon.

Well welcome to the forum first off. Your basically describing an intake vacuum leak in your system. As always the order of things is first go to a auto parts, or repair shop, and have them pull up any stored computer trouble codes. This is usually free. Write down what they say. This is the start point. From there we usually recommend a fuel pressure test to be sure fuel system is sound. Then you'll want to use a smoke machine to find where your Intake leak is coming from. Are you mechanically inclined yourself? Are you going to tackle the repairs yourself! Let us know your progress, we can walk you through this if you do. Please post your progress, as this helps other's. Moose.

I have been trying to tackle this myself. The dealer checked it out and of course wants a bank roll to "fix" it. They said it needed a coil for a misfire and spark plugs and boots and a PCV line replaced All of which I have done except boots and plugs as the plug I pulled looked brand new. The PCV line looks brand new. After disconnecting the battery cable to replace the coil and check the PCV hose it no longer has any diagnostic trouble codes. After about a half hour it sputtered again and would not idle. My mom says its a little better but still not right. I bought the best code reader from Harbor Freight and all I could find was a purge code that says its reading low. Purge $26? Then a P1000 code that I understand to be that the computer needs to run some cycles and the car needs to be driven a while before that will go away. I am not totally sure how to use this scanner as the instructions leave much to be desired. I cleaned the MAF sensor and which ever one is in the air filter housing. Interesting factoid- I unplugged the Maf when it was running and absolutely nothing happened. Not even a sputter. Oh and I am having trouble finding this thread and I am not getting notifications of activity. How can I fix that?
