I have a 1997. It would only switch to AWD. I disconnect the battery to work on another issue and when I connected the battery again, it worked. I checked the motor, fuses, relays and could not figure out what was wrong. I asked it why it wasn't working and told it there was nothing wrong. It listened and worked.

I don't know if it is the same on the 2004 but my 1997 has a GEM, Generic Electronic Module, on the back of the fuse box. It controls the 4wd system. The connectors can corrode and cause problems.
What does the Ford gem do

Well going to the junk yard tomorrow, i hope they have the 4x4 control module. If they do and it still doesn't work looks like a trip to the dealership :(

Do you have access to a digital multi meter?

I would check for voltage at the switch then the module...
