My '97 Expy Eddie Bauer 4X4 does not shift into 4H or 4L. The dash light indicates AWD is working when switched on. The switch checks out so I'm thinking it may be the relay. I do not hear any clicking in the dash (where I believe the switching relay is located) at any switch location including AWD. I want to test this relay next but getting mixed messages with a google search on where it is located. Some say it's under the oval inset on top of the dash (can't find it there) while others say its beneath the speedometer bezel (I haven't attempted to look there yet). Any definitive answers on this and instructions on how to get to it? Thanks for any assistance I can get. I've owned this Expy since new and would love to keep her going.

It says they are under that removable cover on top of the dash. Charm.li is a great website it uses factory manuals for diagnostics and drawings.

Same thing happened to mine, sometimes no lights at all. no relay clicking. I bought a new transfer case shift motor (~$140) and works flawlessly now

As usual check all fuses under the hood and under the dash before tearing anything apart

Then crawl under with a volt meter and see if the connections are getting power while it’s selecting through 2H, 4awd, and 4H, if I’m not mistaken…if you’re getting power the relay is fine, and it’s the motor that went bad

Replacing it took me about 30 minutes max
